Headwaters North Fork Eau Claire TWA

Purpose

Western District Water Quality Staff will be working with multiple County LCDs in developing a 9 Key element plan for the Eau Claire River Watershed. The Eau Claire Watershed falls within multiple county boundaries including Eau Claire, Clark, Chippewa and Taylor counties. Many of the streams in the watershed have recent water quality information that will help establish goals and objectives however recent stream data is lacking in headwater reaches. Western District staff propose to conduct a Targeted Watershed Assessment in the Headwaters of the North Fork Eau Claire River. The TWA assessment will span two HUC 12 watersheds in the headwaters due to the lack of perennial streamflow.

Objective

The primary objective of this project is to collect recent data from streams in the headwaters of the North Fork Eau Claire River HUC 12 watershed to document current conditions and assess water quality problems. These data will be used to determine goals and objectives for streams in the headwaters of the watershed.

Outcome

Western District Water Quality Staff will be working with multiple County LCDs in developing a 9 Key element plan for the Eau Claire River Watershed. The Eau Claire Watershed falls within multiple county boundaries including Eau Claire, Clark, Chippewa and Taylor counties.

Study Design

The evaluation will include conducting fish and qualitative habitat surveys at 8 sites on streams in the watersheds. Macroinvertebrate samples will be collected at each fish site. Growing season TP samples will be collected from May through October at the pore point of the two subsheds and two major tributaries. Grab TP samples will be collected in June at other survey sites to document baseline conditions. Named streams evaluated include the North Fork Eau Claire river, Goggle Eye Creek and Roger Creek. Unnamed streams are identified as intermittent on topographic maps therefore surveys will be selected following reconnaissance in the watershed. HUC 12 - 70500060101
