Shawano Lake Follow-up monitoring for impairment decisions - NER_10_CMP15

Purpose

In 2013 and 2014, East District Biologists had assessed the biological conditions of 8 Tributary Streams to Shawano Lake. Citizen volunteers assisted with Water Quality sample collection in 2014 and will again assist with water quality sample collection in 2015. 4 of the 8 sites need additional water quality samples to assist with impaired waters listing decisions. During the course of original monitoring, 1 site routinely displayed low dissolved oxygen concentrations. This sit may be impaired from low dissolved oxygen but monitoring to meet WisCalm listing guidance has not been met.

Objective

This project will seek to collect additional total phosphorous samples to provide listing recommendations. 4 of the original 8 sample sites either were not sampled in 2014 or are at the threshold for may exceed standards with 1 or more biological confirmations of impairment. Following completion of total phosphorous sampling in 2015, 5 of the original 8 sites should have an adequate subset of monitoring data that will meet Wiscalm guidance for listing on the state's 303(d) list of impaired waters with a degraded biological community and Total Phosphorous as the pollutant.

Outcome

A second year of 6 monthly total phosphorous samples will be collected by volunteers from May thru October in 2015. The district biologist may begin continuous dissolved oxygen monitoring in July and August of 2016 on one site where water low dissolved oxygen concentrations have been observed..

In both 2013 and 2014, DNR stream biologists assessed the biological conditions of eight tributary streams in the Shawano Lake watershed. Four of the eight sites monitored in 2013 and 2014 needed additional water quality samples to assist with making impaired waters listing decisions. Citizen volunteers assisted with water quality sample collection in 2014 and again assisted in with water quality sample collection in 2015, showcasing a very successful partnership between the DNR biologists and WAV volunteers.
