Scuppernong River TMDL

Purpose

Scuppernong River River miles 19.5 20.0. The project portion of the Scuppernong River includes that portion of the river listed on The 303(d) list for temperature impairments, due to conditions to be determined. Its existing use is as a Coldwater (III) fishery, while potential use is Coldwater (II). This portion was likely placed on the 303(d) list due to the discrepancy between existing and potential use. This portion of the stream was known to be channelized, so it is postulated that loss of riparian shade and creation of uniform in- stream habitat is resulting in temperature impairment. The monitoring described below, developed in consultation with Department Staff, will assist in developing a TMDL for thermal impacts, for this portion of the Scuppernong River. Three continuous recording thermisters will be deployed at sites within the Scuppernong River TMDL reach. In addition, one will be deployed upstream of the listed reach, and one will be deployed downstream. Two additional thermisters are requested so as to be available should additional sites be warranted. Wadable Tier I data (2006) will be included as appropriate. Finally, 3 habitat sites (following standard baseline protocol) will be sited within, upstream, and downstream of the listed segments. A TMDL will be developed for the Scuppernong River by June 30, 2007, based on the data collected.

Objective

2. Justification (why is this project necessary?): SER has been directed to develop 5 TMDLs annually. Preparing the TMDL described above will assist in meeting this directive. 3. Performance Measure(s) (including sample collection, report completion date, etc.): Collection of Tier 1 Baseline Sampling at Scuppernong River sites Entry of Tier 1 data into Fish and Habitat Database Deployment, collection, and downloading of thermister data Development of TMDL by June 30, 2007 4. Data Storage System (work station computer, lab portal, SWIMS, FH database, etc.): FH Database Thermister Database 5. File Manager Responsible for Data Entry: Fox/Illinois Biologist
