Impaired Water - Manitowoc River (Manitowoc River)
Manitowoc County, Wisconsin
MA02
71000
2.03 - 20.74
18.71
Water is impaired due to one or more pollutants and associated quality impacts.
Notes
This water, from Revere Street in Manitowoc to Clarks Mills dam, is on the impaired waters (303d list) for PCBs in river bottom sediment. Three fish kills have occurred on this river stretch from 2005 to 2008, likely due to stormwater related solvents entering the river. This water is also known to support a coldwater species and is listed as a smallmouth bass fishery. In the 1990s this water was proposed for addition as a cold water for the NR104 Phase II Rule update. Rusty Crayfish are present in this river stretch. In addition, this water was assessed during the 2012 listing cycle, and total phosphorus sample data exceed 2012 WisCALM listing criteria for the fish and aquatic life use, and both macroinvertebrate and fish Indices of Biotic Integrity (IBI) scored in the poor condition category in 2005.

This water was assessed during the 2014 and 2016 listing cycle; total phosphorus sample data exceed 2014 and 2016 WisCALM listing criteria for the Fish and Aquatic Life use and biological impairment was observed (i.e. at least one macroinvertebrate or fish Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) scored in the poor condition category). In 2016, this water was also assessed for chlorides and sample data did not exceed 2016 WisCALM chronic and acute listing criteria for the Fish and Aquatic Life use.

This water was assessed during the 2018 listing cycle; new total phosphorus sample data exceed 2018 WisCALM listing criteria for the Fish and Aquatic Life use, however, available biological data do not indicate impairment (i.e. no macroinvertebrate or fish Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) scored in the "poor" condition category).

New chloride data were assessed during the 2020 listing cycle and showed conditions appropriate for healthy aquatic communities like plants, fish, and bugs; however, new total phosphorus data were too high for healthy aquatic communities.
