Impaired Water - Newton Creek (Newton Creek)
Douglas County, Wisconsin
LS01
2843650
0.00 - 1.76
1.76
Water is impaired due to one or more pollutants and associated quality impacts.
Notes
Newton Creek is on the 303(d) list due to chronic aquatic toxicity caused by flocs, PAHs, and unspecified metals. It is also on the NR104 list (LFF). Special project monitoring was done (2008-2011) to assess the biological recovery of Newton Creek after remediation/restoration efforts.

This water was assessed during the 2018 listing cycle; new total phosphorus sample data may exceed 2018 WisCALM listing criteria for the Fish and Aquatic Life use and biological impairment was observed (i.e. at least one macroinvertebrate and fish Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) scored in the poor condition category).

Chloride, bug and fish sample data, and total phosphorus were assessed during the 2020 listing cycle. Chloride and fish were appropriate for Aquatic Life use, total phosphorus condition was unclear, and bug sample data were in poor condition.

Impaired Water Notes
Newton Creek's current designation for Fish and Aquatic Life use is as a limited forage fish community (LFF), but from discussion with Dennis Pratt and others, its attainable Fish and Aquatic Life use designation should at least be as a warm-water forage fish community (WWFF), a step up. It needs to be surveyed to see what its current status really is. Also, Murphy Oil may undergo major changes to in the next several years greatly enlarging the refinery, etc, which could lead to changes in water (flow) volume for Newton Creek. It might be best to see what happens concerning this.
