Reference materials 2011 – 2013 projects

In 2011, the DNR Bureau of Endangered Resources/Wisconsin Natural Heritage Inventory initiated a project to close knowledge and information gaps relating to Lake Superior estuaries. This was accomplished by:

  1. conducting a review of published literature and research and restoration projects;
  2. conducting coarse-level inventory on 21 estuaries that were not the focus of the 2000-2002 Coastal Wetlands Assessment; and
  3. creating a prioritized plan to guide future inventory work on Wisconsin’s Lake Superior estuaries.

The following resources were developed as a part of this project.

Lake Superior coastal wetlands & estuaries annotated bibliography
Journal articles, books, white papers, websites, and reports that pertain to Lake Superior coastal wetlands and estuaries, annotated by 32 subtopics.
Lake Superior coastal wetland research directory
A listing of research projects being conducted on Lake Superior Coastal Wetlands based on a 2011-12 survey of partners.
Lake Superior estuary and coastal wetland biotic inventory plan
A prioritized inventory plan for collecting new and updated baseline data of Lake Superior estuaries and coastal wetlands with a secondary goal of collecting information that may inform understanding of estuarine characteristics and functions.

This project was funded by the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management under the Coastal Zone Management Act, Grant #NA11NOS4190097.
