Frequently Asked Questions

December 5, 2011

Here are answers to some of the recent most frequently asked law enforcement questions taken this week by the DNR Call Center.
The Call Center is staffed daily, 7 a.m. - 10 p.m., and offers bilingual service in Spanish and Hmong. The number is 1-888-936-7463.

Question 1: Is it legal to shine deer during the gun-deer season?

Answer: State law allows you to use a light to shine wild animals provided you do not possess any firearm, bow or crossbow. From September 15 - December 31, it is only legal to shine from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Shining is prohibited from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Checking your local municipality is recommended to make sure they do not have ordinances that are more restrictive.

Question 2: When are the deadlines for bear and turkey?

Answer: Spring turkey and Bear application deadline is December 10. Bear application data is submitted over the terminal at the vendor online. Turkey application data either needs to be filled out and postmarked by the December 10 deadline, or submitted online.

Question 3: I'm looking through the regulations for fall turkey and I don't see anywhere if it was approved to extend the season. Did that pass?

Answer: Yes. You may hunt turkeys in Zones 1-5 if you have an unfilled tag from November 28-December 31. The fall turkey hunting season has now been permanently extended in the five southern-most management units (Zone 1-5). The two-year sunset on this two-year trial season extension has now been removed, but this rule change did not occur in time to be printed in the 2011 regulations pamphlet. In future years, the fall turkey season will continued to close on the Thursday before the November 9-day gun-deer season and reopen on the Monday after the nine-day gun-deer season closes, continuing through December 31.
