Frequently Asked Questions

March 26, 2012

Here are answers to some of the recent most frequently asked law enforcement questions taken this week by the DNR Call Center.
The Call Center is staffed daily, 7 a.m. - 10 p.m., and offers bilingual service in Spanish and Hmong. The number is 1-888-936-7463.

Question 1: When are the boat registration renewal notices going to be sent?

Answer: Registration renewal notices started going out in the mail last week. We hope to have all renewals mailed during this week.

Question 2: I was doing a boat transfer online. During the process, I received a prompt to mail in a title. Here is the problem: It is in my father's name and he has passed away. How can I proceed with this since he can no longer sign the title?

Answer: If there is a surviving spouse, please use Form 9400-471 Affidavit for transfer of Recreational Vehicle or Boat to Surviving Spouse. This form can be completed and signed by the spouse. The form also needs to be witnessed and stamped by a notary public. The bottom part of the form allows the surviving spouse to transfer to another individual. This form can be mailed in with the blank title.

Question 3: Does an inflatable life jacket have to be worn at all times?

Answer: An inflatable life jacket is a Type V personal flotation device (PFD) which is required to be worn when the vessel is moving. To learn more about personal flotation devices, go to and search PFD.
