Frequently Asked Questions

March 19, 2012

Here are answers to some of the recent most frequently asked law enforcement questions taken this week by the DNR Call Center.
The Call Center is staffed daily, 7 a.m. - 10 p.m., and offers bilingual service in Spanish and Hmong. The number is 1-888-936-7463.

Question 1: I noticed my boat decals are expiring at the end of the month. I haven't received a renewal notice yet. How can I renew it so it doesn't expire?

Answer: Boat renewal notices began being mailed out in late February. If you need to renew and haven't received notice, you can do so easily on the website at Just click on register/boat/atv/snow and then click online. Please note there is an extra fee of $1 for processing plus the renewal fee or you can visit one of the many registration agents near you. To find a list of the agents go to the same link and click on agents and registration, and you can search by county or city.

Question 2: My child didn't draw a turkey license this spring. However, my child would like to still participate in the youth turkey hunt on April 7 and 8. My question is how can my child still go hunting?

Answer: Even though a tag wasn't awarded, it is still possible to purchase a turkey license for spring so that a youth can go out during the turkey hunt. During the week of March 19 - 23 the leftover permits will go on sale. The child will need to purchase a turkey stamp and tag for the appropriate zone that he or she will be hunting. The permit can be for any spring 2012 season but the youth are required to hunt in the zone that the permit is issued. If the child does not have a successful hunt, then the permit is still valid for the season dates printed on the license.

Question 3: What type of fishing is open now?

Answer: The fishing seasons depend on the body of water in which you are wanting to fish and the species. You need to first look under the county section of the regulation booklet to see if the body of water lists any special regulations. If no special regulations are listed, the seasons and bag limits are listed in the general pages in the back of the regulation booklet. Some bodies of water have game fish open year-round and some only have pan or rough fish currently open. Any customer service representative will be able to assist you with finding the regulations for the body of water you are wanting to fish. Just provide them the county and body of water name, along with the species of fish you are looking to catch.
