Seedling stock descriptions

The nursery does not grade and sell trees by size class. Trees are graded on a pass/fail basis, based on seedling stem and root quality and a minimum acceptable size. Because of this, seedling size can be quite variable for some species. The minimum size for each species/age class is the smallest seedling deemed by reforestation staff to have a high probability of surviving and thriving after out-planting.

Hardwood and shrub seedlings are top-cut to approximately 14 inches to improve the root:top ratio, and to aid in shipping and handling. Top-cutting has been repeatedly shown to have no detrimental effect on seedling growth and survival.
