Potawatomi State Park Current conditions

Observation Tower Closed: The observation tower at Potawatomi State Park is permanently closed due to significant wood decay. The department is planning for deconstruction of the tower with the intention to remove it as soon as practicable. There are no plans to replace the tower at this time, however other viewing opportunities at the park include the Old Ski Hill Overlook and pull-offs along Shoreline Road. The department is exploring other viewing opportunities as part of the current master planning process.

Trails

All trails are open to hiking. The suggested hiking trails are the Ice Age Trail or Hemlock Trail.

Events

See the DNR Events Calendar for a complete list of events at Potawatomi and other state parks.

Camping

Don't move firewood!

Don't move firewood!Due to the potential of carrying harmful tree pests and diseases, Wisconsin has restrictions for moving firewood.

The campground is open. Any sites that are not reserved are available on a nightly basis at the park office. If you arrive after the office is closed, you must register and pay before setting up. The self-registration kiosk is on the side of the office building.

The dump station, shower building, and flush toilets are closed for the season. The winter drinking water supply is in the campground.

Campsites may be reserved online or by calling 1-888-947-2757.

Nature

This is a great time of year to visit the park. The leaves are past peak but there is still a little color left and it is a great time to hike the Hemlock Trail. Sandhill cranes have been seen in the neighboring corn fields by the park entrance and can also be seen flying over the park. Park staff have spotted lots of deer activity throughout the park. Please remember to leave wildlife alone and view from a distance.

Fall Colors

Fishing

The fish cleaning station is closed for the season. The docks are in at the boat launch and are scheduled to be removed November 5.

The park’s accessible fishing pier was severely damaged by high waves in 2014 and removed from the water. The Friends of Potawatomi State Park plan have started a fundraising campaign to support replacement of the accessible fishing pier in the picnic area.

Park store

The park store is closed for the season.
