Big Bay State Park Current conditions

Getting to the park

Big Bay State Park is located on Madeline Island, about seven miles from the ferry landing at the town of La Pointe. Access to the island and the park is by way of the Madeline Island Ferry [exit DNR].

When the ferry is not in operation, a wind sled provides transport for passengers only across the ice between Bayfield and Madeline Island. For more information regarding the wind sled schedule call 715-747-5400.

There is no public transportation or taxi service on the island. An annual sticker or daily pass is required for all vehicles at the park.

Beautiful rock formations along the park's sandstone cliffs on Lake Superior are best viewed along the Point Trail which can be accessed a few hundred yards east of the main park entrance.

It is advised that all visitors keep safety in mind when visiting the park by following designated trails and park rules. Pets are allowed on most trails (except the beach or boardwalk trail) and must be on a leash 8 feet or shorter at all times. Bicycles are permitted only on roads and in parking areas.

See the DNR Events Calendar for a list of events at Big Bay and other state parks.

More information

A vehicle admission sticker is required year-round. When the park office is closed, use the self-registration pay kiosk to buy admission stickers.
