Fishing Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is the only agency in the country with a comprehensive waters program that unifies regulatory, environmental quality and resource management functions to provide for a fisheries management program that supports 161 different fish species.

The Fisheries Management program is responsible for protecting, improving, and managing Wisconsin's fisheries resources and fish habitat for the benefit of all citizens and visitors. One-third of Wisconsin's citizens fish. Each year 1.4-million licensed residents and nonresident anglers fish Wisconsin's lakes, streams, and rivers. Sportfishing generates $2.86-billion in economic activity, more than $200-million in state taxes, and supports 31,350 jobs. More than 95% of the funding used by Fisheries comes from the sale of fishing licenses and related federal grants.
