DNR to audit Peninsula State Park water use and improve water efficiency

How is water used at Peninsula State Park? What are the most effective ways to reduce water use at the park in the short and long term?

Answering these questions are the purpose behind a new grant received by the DNR from the Wisconsin Coastal Management program to conduct a pilot water audit at Peninsula State Park in Door County Wisconsin.

Through this project the DNR will:

  • Find out where and how water is used at Peninsula State Park
  • Identify options for reducing water use or improving water efficiency
  • Fix leaks and retrofit water infrastructure such as toilets, showerheads, and faucet aerators to high efficiency models
  • Create a template for conducting water audits at other state parks

  • Peninsula State Park has more than 1 million visitors annually, the second highest visitor rate of all Wisconsin State Parks.
  • As part of efforts to implement a water conservation program in Wisconsin, the state is piloting efforts to review water use at state parks.

  • The water audit will be conducted in Spring 2013.
  • Water Infrastructure will be repaired and replaced in the Winter 2014.
  • A follow up audit will be conducted in Spring 2014 to verify the water savings from the retrofit.

For more information about the park including a map of the park, directions or hours of operation, please see the Peninsula State Park website.
