DNR and county forest base stumpage rates

Stumpage is the price a private firm pays for the right to harvest timber from a given land base. Base stumpage rates are established for specific properties to assist foresters in accurately appraising timber prior to sale. Base stumpage rates for individual and groups of DNR managed properties, as well as county forest properties, are revised annually.

The base stumpage rates are established by using sold timber sale data in combination with input, based on local market knowledge, from the property manager and forester for each property or stumpage rate area. Base stumpage rates are established for individual or groups of properties and can vary widely based on factors such as land ownership, location, current markets, weather, accessibility, quality of timber, quantity of timber and many other factors. Consequently the base stumpage rates posted on this site should not be utilized for establishing timber values on other properties.
