Northern Highland-American Legion State ForestReservable shelters

The Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest offers two reservable shelter buildings. They are located at Crystal Lake Campground and picnic area and Clear Lake picnic area. Each building is enclosed and have picnic tables and a grill available for your use. Vault toilets and hand pumps for water are available near each shelter building.

The Crystal Lake shelter building is within walking distance to the Crystal Lake beaches. The shelter is near the popular Heart of Vilas County Bike Trail, Crystal Lake Nature Center and Tom Roberts Memorial Trail. This building includes electricity and the cost to rent is $45 per day. An admission sticker is required on all vehicles.

The Clear Lake shelter building, located on Highway J in Woodruff, provides you with easy access to the beach and accessible fishing pier. A boat landing for Clear Lake is nearby with ample parking. Trail access for the Clear Lake paved bike trail is also located at the picnic area. This shelter does not have electricity and the cost to the is $40 per day. Vehicle admission stickers are not required.

Reservations

Reservations may be made through the Wisconsin State Parks reservation system.

Shelter rules

  • Shelter hours are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • The person making the reservation is responsible for general cleanup and care of the facility and ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and rules. Any decorations should be temporary and completely removable. Staples, pins, paper and tape must all be removed after use.
  • The responsible person is liable for any damage done to the shelter during the reserved date.
  • All visitors must carry out their garbage and recyclables. Please bring adequate bags/containers to enable you to take your garbage and recyclables with you.
  • No tents may be set up outside shelter without prior approval.
  • No bands, DJ's or amplified music are allowed, but acoustical music is allowed.

Parking

At the Crystal Lake shelter, vehicle admission stickers are required on all motorized vehicles and may be purchased at a group rate. Minimum group rate is 20 stickers at $5 each ($100). Contact the state forest to order/pay for stickers at least seven days in advance but not more than one year prior to event. Group rate stickers are non-refundable. If you are not interested in purchasing group rate stickers, guests will need to purchase a daily sticker on the day of the event.
