Agribusiness sector

The agribusiness sector includes the farm subsectors and the food processing sectors.

Some of the farm sectors in Wisconsin include: dairy cattle and milk production, beef cattle ranching, pork production, poultry and turkey production, fish hatcheries, nursery and floriculture production, fur-bearing and rabbit production, corn farming, potato farming, soybean farming, cranberry production, apple orchards, non-citrus fruit and tree nut farming, mushroom production, organic and specialty farming and berry farming.

Food processing

Some of the food processing sectors in Wisconsin include: dry, condensed and evaporated dairy, specialty cheeses and organic milk, frozen specialty food processing, fruit and vegetable canning, meat processing, baked goods and beverages (including bottled water).

Consumer influence

Consumers can play a critical role in creating a sustainable food system. Through their purchases, they send strong messages to producers, retailers and others in the system about what they think are important. Food cost and nutritional quality have always influenced consumer choices. The challenge now is to find strategies that broaden consumer perspectives, so that environmental quality, resource use and social equity issues are also considered in shopping decisions.

Green Tier and Environmental Charters are just one method to enable producers using sustainable practices to market their goods to a wider public.

Sector Support

There are many resources for farmers and other agricultural operators that provide information and guidance about farming and the environment. In addition to the Department of Natural Resources and the University of Wisconsin Extension (UWEX) [exit DNR], resources are available from other Wisconsin state agencies, your local government, the federal government and various associations.
