St. Croix River L. Helmuth

The Department of Natural Resources is responsible for implementing the Clean Water Act, ensuring healthy fisheries, and managing and supporting aquatic ecosystems. As part of this work DNR conducts research to better understand and support river systems. The scientists research and evaluate tools needed to measure ecosystem health to prevent reducing the health of aquatic communities.

Streams natural communities in Wisconsin provides the basis of many water quality management work and is derived from analytical modeling that predicts stream flow and temperature, two controlling factors in stream community composition, structure and biotic assemblage. Areas of fish and habitat research include: Biological indicies, habitat, management & regulation, propagation and citizen monitoring.
