Natural Heritage Inventory (NHI) Portal

The Natural Heritage Inventory Database is the most comprehensive source of rare species data for Wisconsin. These data are used for a variety of purposes including research, land management, state land master planning, community planning, conservation planning and review of public and private activities across the state. The NHI Portal is currently available to DNR staff and those outside the DNR who hold a data sharing license.

*This sign in page is for non-DNR only. DNR staff should visit the intranet NHI Portal page.

Terms and conditions

  • Access to and use of the NHI Portal and the data contained therein is subject to the terms and conditions of the user's NHI data license agreement and the DNR's Legal notices, disclaimers and terms of use.
  • Materials and features may be added to or withdrawn from the NHI Portal or otherwise changed without notice.
  • There can be no guarantee that the NHI Portal will always be available, or any warranty in terms of network uptime or connectivity. Please notify the ER Review Program about technical problems with the NHI Portal.

Natural Heritage Inventory (NHI) Training is offered to individuals and organizations that have a NHI data license. This training provides information on the NHI Program, Wisconsin's Endangered Species Law, details the Endangered Resources (ER) Review process, explains how to access NHI data via the web-based NHI Portal and outlines resources for additional information about protected species and habitats.
