Silvernail Wildlife Area

Silvernail Wildlife Area is a 1,040-acre property located in the extreme north-central part of Rusk County. The property lies approximately 6 miles east of State Highway 27 at the Rusk/Sawyer county line. Primitive access (no roads) is possible from the north via Sawyer County Forest at the Thornapple Grade (S.34). From the south, access is possible through Plum Creek managed forest lands via Flambeau Road in section 13-T.36N-R.5W. The habitat consists primarily of northern hardwood and hardwood/hemlock forest. The property is bisected by a tributary of the Thornapple River in the extreme northwest and Spring Creek at its midsection.

Management Objectives

The project is managed for forest species of game and non-game wildlife.

Recreation

The Silvernail Wildlife Area offers many recreational opportunities:

  • Birding;
  • Cross-country skiing (no designated trail);
  • Hiking;
  • Hunting (especially noted for deer, bear, ruffed grouse, squirrels, rabbits and raccoon);
  • Snowmobiling (marked trail);
  • Trapping;
  • Wild edibles/gathering; and
  • Wildlife viewing.
