Lightning Creek Wildlife Area
Lightning Creek Wildlife Area is a 329-acre property located in Barron County on the west side of Almena, north of Highway 8. Much of the wildlife area is in conservation easement, while 60 acres are state-owned. The property consists of marsh and stream bottom.
Management Objectives
The Lightning Creek Wildlife Area was acquired to develop a waterfowl flowage on the north side of Highway 8. That project has since been suspended due to expense and budget cuts. The property offers suitable habitat for waterfowl, furbearers, upland game and deer.

The Lightning Creek Wildlife Area offers many recreational opportunities:

- Cross-country skiing (no designated trail);
- Hiking (no designated trail);
- Hunting (especially noted for waterfowl);
- Trapping (especially noted for beaver, muskrats and otter);
- Wild edibles/gathering; and
- Wildlife viewing.
