Dover Wildlife Area

Dover Wildlife Area is an 80-acre property located 4 miles northwest of Union Grove in Racine County at the intersection of Highway 20 and Britton Road. Habitat on the property is a mixture of wetlands (cattail marsh, wet prairie), lowland brush, warm and cool season grasses and small woodlands. The property is designated as a refuge and is closed to all entry from Sept. 1 to Dec. 31, except for the nine-day gun deer hunting season. Hunting opportunities exist for gun deer and, outside of the closed period, for small game hunting and spring turkey season.

Management Objectives

The property was purchased by the state in 1967, and the Department of Transportation transferred an 8.5-acre parcel in the northeast corner to the DNR. The property is managed through the use of prescribed burns, mowing, removal of invasive plants and herbicide application.

  • Birding;
  • Hiking (no designated trails);
  • Hunting (gun deer season only, plus small game and spring turkey outside closed period);
  • Trapping; and
  • Wildlife viewing.
