Mashek Creek Public Access
Mashek Creek Public Access is a 25-acre property on the Lake Michigan shoreline in Kewaunee County. The property consists of lowland coniferous forest and upland grassland. Mashek Creek flows through the property into Lake Michigan. Find it north of Kewaunee with parking access located on Lakeshore Drive, east of Highway 42.
Acquisition of the property was in 2010 with funds from the statewide public access program. This property is an important migratory bird area and public access point for fishing on Mashek Creek. Trout and salmon have been documented using Mashek Creek for spawning. The wildlife area also provides public access to Lake Michigan along its 1,600 feet of undisturbed shoreline.
Management Objectives
Current management of Mashek Creek Public Access is to maintain the cool season grasslands by mowing. Grasslands are maintained to provide nesting cover for waterfowl and many other non-game grassland bird species. The forest structure will be maintained at its current composition through prescribed timber harvest. Mashek Creek will continue to be surveyed for trout and salmon spawning use.
