DNR Fisheries Areas

Blue River is a class 2 trout stream in Grant and Iowa Counties near the Snow Bottoms Natural Area. The Blue River is a specifically named and codified as an Exceptional Resource Waters (ERW).

Location/Directions

The Blue River lands start at the junction with Castle Rock Creek (aka Fennimore Fork of Blue River) in Grant County (T 8N, R 1W, section 29) and proceed upstream to headwater springs in Iowa County (T 6N, R 1E, section 22).

The fishing easement areas are basically restricted to fishing and associated activities only; the fee title lands may be used as shown below:

  • Hunting - deer, turkey, small game, & waterfowl
  • Trapping

  • Fishing - trout fishing with special regulations
  • Bird watching
  • Pets
  • Berry picking

Objective

The Blue River Fishery Area is managed to provide a high quality scenic trout fishing opportunities, protect adjacent uplands for scenic amenities associated with fishing, hunting, and other compatible upland outdoor recreational uses, and protect the Snow Bottom Natural Area.
