Flambeau River Papers [exit DNR]

Flambeau River Papers EMS Certified to ISO 14001 Tier 1 participant since 06/12/2012

Flambeau River Papers has operated the Park Falls mill since 2006, investing over $24 million in process and infrastructure improvements. The mill produces a variety of paper products including printing, converting, book, art and specialty papers. A commitment to sustainability drives Flambeau River Papers to generate its products with minimal impact on the environment, from purchasing wood harvested in accordance with sustainable forestry practices and operating a chlorine-free mill to reducing energy consumption and using alternative energy sources.

Annual report tidbit

Several area crafters continue to benefit from the mill’s turn up tape recycling program. Baskets, ornaments, and placemats are a few examples of items that have been made from the material. A piece of artwork made from the tape was recently on display at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau.

Environmental activities

Part of the mill’s commitment to energy conservation led to the use of biomass and other alternative fuels for plant operations. This allowed the mill to maintain a steady annual energy cost and decrease dependence on fossil fuels while increasing production. The mill is proud to report that 70 percent of the fuel used to generate steam and electricity on-site was carbon neutral in 2011. Flambeau River Papers is also dedicated to sustainable industry practices and maintains third party certifications from independent organizations including:

  • the Forest Stewardship Council;
  • the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification;
  • the Sustainable Forestry Initiative; and
  • the International Organization for Standardization, which certifies the mill’s environmental management system.
