MFL and FCL harvesting step #8: Submitting the cutting reportDNR forester review

Red pine forest
Red pine forest.

Once the cutting report has been submitted, the DNR forester will review it to determine if it can be approved.  As part of their review, the DNR forester may:

  • inspect the harvest area to verify that the cutting was conducted according to the landowner’s management plan and consistent with sound forestry practices;
  • inspect the harvest area to ensure BMPs for water quality were implemented correctly; and
  • confirm that the NHI, archaeological, historical and cultural prescriptions were carried out as prescribed on the cutting notice.

The DNR forester will then approve the cutting report. If the DNR forester determines that additional work is needed to fulfill what was prescribed in the cutting notice, the DNR forester will prescribe additional steps to be completed before approval.

Once the cutting report is approved, the DNR forester will update the landowner’s management plan, including verifying or modifying the next harvest date.

Videos not updated: 2015 Wisconsin Act 358 was signed into law in April 2016. This new law makes numerous changes to the Managed Forest Law (MFL) and some changes to the Forest Crop Law (FCL). Much of the website has been updated to reflect these changes; however, videos have not yet been updated. Much of the information contained in the videos is relevant and important but some details related to review and approval of cutting notices and severance/yield taxes are no longer accurate. Please note this when viewing the videos. If you have questions, please contact your local DNR tax law forestry specialist. You can find their contact information using the Forestry Assistance Locator.
