Wisconsin's Sturgeon Management Plan

Review Wisconsin's Sturgeon Management Plan [PDF]

The Department of Natural Resources currently manages lake sturgeon under the guidance of a management plan that was adopted in October 2000.  The plan addressed many issues with sturgeon management at the time including: developing standardized collection techniques, identifying critical seasonal habitat use, genetics and practicing best propagation techniques, regulations, and private rearing of lake sturgeon.  Although the plan is only 18 years old, it has become outdated because of the great progress and the fact that many objectives identified in the plan have been met.  Further, the existing plan does not incorporate shovelnose sturgeon management issues and there is desire to have a plan that encompasses management of both sturgeon species.

The sturgeon team and the planning process

The DNR Sturgeon Team began a process to update the sturgeon management plan in 2017.  The first step was to thoroughly review the objectives and work that has been done to address those objectives.  The review document is complete and the team is now looking to focus efforts on updating the plan.  To kick off this process, the department will be holding 8 public meetings across Wisconsin to engage stakeholders and the general public into the management plan process.  Comments received during the meetings, and through an open comment period, will be collated and discussed during the planning process.  An advisory group of representatives from various sturgeon interests will be formed and used during the planning process, as well.
