Fishing Wisconsin Lake Superior Fishing Agreement

The Lake Superior Fishing Agreement is a fisheries based agreement among the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewas and the State. The previous agreement expired in 2015 and has had 3 extensions, with the latest expiring November 27, 2018. Negotiations have been ongoing for 4 years with a goal of a collaborative agreement to determine fish harvest allocations, harvest management and the protection of the Lake Superior fishery, a shared resource.

Issues related to the Lake Superior fishery have been negotiated by the three parties as an avenue to work out the issues on their own. The negotiations that were part of this settlement created the current agreement and are treated as confidential, like other lawsuit settlement negotiations. The department has taken considerable efforts to engage stakeholders on the Lake Superior fishery issues while maintaining a confidential process and commitment with the other two parties. The agreement was signed on December 14, 2018 by all three parties.

As part of the outreach process of informing stakeholders on the current agreement, a meeting was held on January 10, 2019. The presentation with audio is linked below along with the past and current agreement. Please refer back to this page for future public meeting notices and updated information.
