Species guidance

Identification: A medium-sized green grasshopper with a central pink stripe on the pronotum and slanted face. Wings do not reach the end of the abdomen. The dorsal surface of the femur is red and tibias are green.

Similar Species: Hesperotettix viridis has more colorful legs and less colorful pronotum. Hypochlora alba is the only other small green, though gray-green, adult and yet to be found in the state.

Habitat: Grassland/herbaceous.

State Distribution: Sauk Co.

Global Distribution: From Montana east to Minnesota and south to New Mexico and Texas (Vickery and Kevan, 1985).

Rationale for Species Listing and Threats: Vickery and Kevan (1985) stated Mulkern's reports that at one locality, North Platte, Nebraska, abundance fluctuated in a direct relationship with the abundance of the foods Helianthus annuus and Iva xanthifolia.
