Species guidance

Identification: Large, long-winged grasshopper with strongly slanted head, variable in color from brown to green but with a distinctive line of spots along the forewings. A white marking behind the eye and along the lower edge of pronotum in the male. Antennae slightly clavate. Hind femur with a pale band near the knee.

Similar Species: Stethophyma spp. and Mermeria bivittatus are also large but not similarly marked.

Habitat: High quality prairie bluffs in western Wisconsin.

State Distribution: Southwest corner of the state.

Global Distribution: Mexico across southeastern US and north to Iowa, Wisconsin Michigan, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Phenology: August and September.
