Species guidance

Identification: A long-winged, medium to large-sized yellowish grasshopper with blue tibias. Send male specimen to an expert for accurate ID.

Similar Species: Many long-winged Melanoplines. Several have blue legs.

Habitat: Open sand areas of dunes, river terraces, etc. General habitat rangewide: grassland/herbaceous, sand/dune. Dry sandy grasslands, sandy ground, and blow-outs in midwestern states. In Colorado this is a plains species and is common in pastures along the Rocky Mountain foothills.

State Distribution: Scattered counties on high quality sand habitat.

Global Distribution: Alberta to northwest Indiana, south to Colorado and Kansas.

Phenology: Adults mid July into September.
