Wisconsin PFAS Action Plan

The Wisconsin PFAS Action Council (WisPAC) is developing and coordinating statewide initiatives to address growing public health and environmental concerns regarding PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in Wisconsin. The first task of WisPAC is to lead the development of a comprehensive Wisconsin PFAS Action Plan, which will create a roadmap for how state agencies will address these emerging chemicals.

About the Action Plan

As a group, WisPAC will decide on what goes into the plan. Development of the first draft will factor in suggestions from WisPAC members (state agencies), two advisory groups and the general public.

Action Plan focus areas

The Action Plan will be organized into four focus areas.

  1. Preventing Future Discharges and Exposures
  2. Inventorying and Minimizing Current PFAS Exposures
  3. Identifying and Addressing Historic or Legacy PFAS Discharges or Exposures
  4. Educating and Communicating About the Risks Associated with PFAS

Public input opportunities

WisPAC would like to hear what Wisconsinites think are the most important issues facing the state when it comes to PFAS, and what actions can be taken to address these emerging chemicals. Therefore, there are a number of opportunities for public input regarding the Action Plan, including a survey, advisory groups and public meetings.

WisPAC surveyed the public from February 3-21, 2020, to collect input to be considered by the state for possible inclusion in the Wisconsin PFAS Action Plan. Results of the survey will be discussed at WisPAC meetings in March 2020.

Advisory groups

Two advisory groups have been established. One group will focus on issues facing local units of government, while the other will be focused more on citizen or public input. These groups will host public meetings to provide a forum for engagement in the plan development process. Recommendations collected at advisory group meetings will be compiled and forwarded as proposals for WisPAC to consider for inclusion in the Action Plan.

While the initial focus of meetings is on plan development, the intent is for these groups to continue to meet periodically to provide feedback on Action Plan implementation and other WisPAC-related efforts.

Upcoming meetings

The public is invited to attend upcoming citizen advisory group meetings and listening sessions taking place in February and March, and which are listed below. In addition, all WisPAC meetings are open to the public. A full schedule is listed on the WisPAC webpage.
