GREEN BAY, Wis.- Brown County has applied for a 50% matching grant from the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program to assist with the purchase of approximately four and one-half acres on the Bay of Green Bay in the city of Green Bay.
The property includes approximately 250 feet of bay frontage and a breakwater structure. The county proposes to develop a public boat launch facility and harbor of refuge on the Bay of Green Bay utilizing the existing breakwater structure.
Stewardship-purchased land cannot prohibit nature-based outdoor activities (hunting, trapping, fishing, hiking or cross-country skiing) unless the Department of Natural Resources has determined that prohibiting one or more of those activities is justified to protect public safety.
Should this property be acquired as planned, city ordinance and a county resolution will prohibit the discharge of firearms on the property, and county ordinance will prohibit trapping on the property. The department is proposing that the prohibition of gun hunting and trapping on this property because it is necessary to protect public safety. The department has examined the following factors in making this determination: the narrow width of the property and proximity to residential lots and a public roadway.
The department's initial assessment of the allowed Nature-Based Outdoor Activities [PDF] may be downloaded from the Stewardship Public Notice page on the DNR website, or you may request a hard copy by contacting the project contact listed below.
