CELEBRATING CLEAN AIR
April 26, 2011
MADISON -- May is Clean Air Month and the actions we take each day can affect the quality of the air we breathe. Clean Air Month is a great opportunity to focus on improving air quality and learning about clean air.
With a 40 year track record of successfully reducing pollution while allowing economic growth, the Clean Air Act has brought significant reductions in dangerous smog and air pollutants.
Following are several easy ways to learn about air quality and protect your health:
- Good air quality is important to your health, and air advisories can help manage asthma and other respiratory problems. Sign up to receive notices when Air Quality Advisories are called in the county you live, work or vacation in. On advisory days, take it easy and try to reduce your air emissions.
- Visit the Air Quality pages of the DNR website and learn about how the quality of our air can affect your health.
- Learn about the history of the Clean Air Act and historical milestones in protecting air quality and human health through "Celebrating 40 Years of Cleaner Air" and clean air timeline on the DNR website.
- Help reduce air emissions - it all adds up to cleaner air:
- Visit the Do A Little Save A Lot page of the DNR website or Air Repair (pdf) publication for ideas on reducing your impact on the environment.
- Do your share for cleaner air.
- Try biking to work this week, or carpool with a co-worker.
- Turn off lights, electronic equipment and appliances when not in use both at home and in the office.
- Don't burn your spring yard clippings. Try composting or chipping instead.
- Share the information with kids, teachers, friends and family:
- DNR has many resources available for the public. Visit the Air Education resources available to learn about air quality and health.
- Bring classroom resources to your child's teacher so he or she can use them to teach the class about how air quality can affect asthma and what we can do to keep the air clean.
- Log on the EEK! (Environmental Education for Kids) web site with your children for fun activities and learning.
