Lake Wissota SP information

This park northeast of Chippewa Falls has more than 1,000 acres of forest and open prairie on a 6,300-acre man-made lake. Lake Wissota State Park offers secluded campsites, hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, picnic and playground areas, and a 285-foot swimming beach. Boating, canoeing, kayaking, and water skiing are popular summer activities on Lake Wissota.

Candlelight Hike

Location: Horicon Marsh Education Center

Hiking by candlelight, a roaring bonfire, roasted marshmallows and warm refreshments await everyone at the 9th annual Horicon Marsh Candlelight Hike. There are two trails available. One trail is 1.5 miles and another "Family Loop" is only 0.36 miles. The Education Center will be open for people to warm up, view the 20 minute "Horicon Marsh Story." The Northern Cross Science Foundation astronomers will be on site to help you view the night sky through telescopes or to talk about the stars if it is cloudy. Friends of Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center will line the trails with candle-powered luminaries to welcome and guide hikers. Admission to the event is free; however, please consider bringing a non-perishable food item or hats/gloves/mittens for our food drive and mitten campaign. Parking is limited at the education center so please consider using the shuttles. Free shuttles will be available from Mayville and Horicon from 4:30-9:30pm. The Mayville Shuttle will be located at Theiler Park, N8282 County Road TW, Mayville. The Horicon Shuttle will be located in the Bethesda parking lot at 620 Washington St, Horicon. Horicon Marsh Education Center information

Horicon Marsh has been formally recognized as a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention of the United Nations. This renowned marsh is now home to the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center. The Wildlife Education Program has been conducted at the marsh since the mid-1980s. This program focuses on the abundant wildlife resources of the marsh, their ecology and applied management.

This billion-year-old hill is one of the oldest geological formations on earth. Rib Mountain State Park is a premier day-use facility with picnicking, hiking trails and a reservable amphitheater. The top of the 60-foot observation tower offers spectacular views of the Wausau area and Wisconsin River. Granite Peak Ski Area is on the north face of the mountain and offers downhill skiing and snowboarding during winter.

Ski or hike the 1.6 mile purple loop through the woods that will be illuminated by 450 candles! Bonfire and charcoal will be available if you would like to roast marshmallows or cookout. Leashed dogs are allowed on ski trail-at this event only. State Park Stickers and day passes will be available for purchase when you arrive. No skate skiing and No skijoring. The Nordic Trail is located on Hwy H - 4 miles south of Palmyra and 1.5 miles north of LaGrange.

Kettle Moraine SF - Southern Unit information

More than 22,000 acres of glacial hills, kettles, lakes, prairie restoration sites, pine woods and hardwood forests can be found in the Southern Unit, making this a popular area for a wide variety of visitors. The Forest is 30 miles long, extending from the village of Dousman, almost to the city of Whitewater. The forest headquarters is 3 miles west of the village of Eagle on State Highway 59.

Cross-Country Ski the candlelit Red Cedar State Trail from the Depot to the lit ice wall. Snowshoe the candlelit trail in Riverside Park. Hike the candlelit Junction City Trail. All activities start at the Red Cedar State Trail Depot, Highway 29 West. Enjoy free hot chocolate and door prizes provided by the . There will be a bonfire will keep you warm and the depot will be open. Skis are required for the Red Cedar State Trail. Red Cedar ST information

This 14.5-mile rail trail shadows the steep walls of the Red Cedar Valley from Menomonie to its connection with the Chippewa River State Trail. Along its route, the trail passes through the communities of Irvington and Downsville and the Dunnville State Wildlife Area. The trail passes by prairies, marshland bottoms, forests and farmlands, including sandstone bluffs and other unique rock formations. In the Dunnville Wildlife Area, the Red Cedar trail connects to the Chippewa River State Trail.

Join us at the MECCA Ski Trails for our annual winter skiing and snowshoeing event! The trail begins at the heated trailhead cabin on Fierick Road in Mercer. Watch for the signs. Trail passes or park stickers are not required but donations will be graciously accepted. Join us for winter activities at the beach area picnic pavilion at Brunet Island State Park! Enjoy sledding down the beach hill or strap on the skis for a beautiful candlelight ski. The trail will also be groomed for hiking or snowshoeing along the cross-country trail. The fireplaces will be stoked and hot refreshments and hot dogs will be waiting to warm you! No pets allowed  Cross-country skis and snowshoes will be available for loan. 3-5 p.m. sledding; 5-7 p.m. candlelight ski and snowshoe.

Come join the Friends of Point Beach State Forest to enjoy Point Beach's annual winter candlelight event! A 1-mile trail will be lit by luminaries for hikers and skiers. The lodge features two warming fires along with food and refreshments. Leashed pets are allowed on the hiking trail portion, but are not allowed in the Lodge building. Park admission fees are required and can be purchased at the office.

Point Beach State Forest features 3,000 acres of land and six miles of sandy beach along the shores of Lake Michigan. Point Beach offers family campsites, two large group cabins and an outdoor group camp. A popular feature within the property is the Rawley Point Lighthouse, which has been operated and maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard since 1853.

Friends of Lapham Peak Annual Candlelight Ski/Hike

The Friends of Lapham Peak (exit DNR) will host the annual Candlelight Ski/Hike at the Homestead Hollow Picnic Area. Ski, snowshoe or hike by candlelight on a 1-mile (1.5 km) trail! Afterwards, a campfire and grill will be available for use, and hot beverages and treats will be available for a small donation in the Trecker Lodge.

Parking inside of the property is limited to approximately 450 vehicles. Carpooling is encouraged. Parking for cars and pickup trucks only--no trailer, bus or RV parking. There is no roadside parking. A 2019 Wisconsin State Park annual vehicle admission sticker or a $5 Special Event daily vehicle admission fee is required per car.

In addition to the vehicle admission, a free ticket voucher is required for each vehicle that wishes to attend the event. Vouchers will be available at the park office beginning Jan. 1, 2019. Please call the park office at 262-646-3025 to ensure vouchers are still available. Limit one per person at time of pickup. Park staff encourages people wishing to participate in the candlelight hike to pick up a voucher at the Lapham Peak office prior to 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25, 2019.

Ticket vouchers will specify the admission time and presented at the gate for access. Entrants should arrive during the time frame specified. Ticket voucher time frames:

  • 6 to 7 p.m., Max 250 cars with reservation
  • 7 to 8 p.m., Max 150 cars with reservation
  • 8 to 8:30 p.m., Entrance gate discretion (Late skiers must start by 8:45 p.m.)

Kettle Moraine SF - Lapham Peak Unit information

The Kettle Moraine and Lapham Peak were formed 10,000 years ago when a glacier covered much of Wisconsin. Lapham Peak's glaciated topography provides excellent hiking, backpacking, and cross-country skiing on lighted trails. Climb a 45-foot observation tower atop the highest point in Waukesha County (1,233 feet above sea level).

Come join us at the MacKenzie Center for a fun Friday night of hiking and snowshoeing. Snowshoes will be provided, or you can bring your own! The MacKenzie Center, just 25 miles north of Madison, is one of the most diverse education centers in Wisconsin. With interpretive trails, exhibits, museums and programming available for school and youth groups, MacKenzie is a wonderful place to visit and learn about the natural world. The State Game Farm is connected to the MacKenzie Center and is adjacent to the arboretum on the western half of the property.

Copper Culture SP information

The 42-acre Copper Culture State Park is on the north side of the Oconto River, on the west side of the city of Oconto. It was the site of a prehistoric cemetery of the Old Copper Complex people who occupied the northern Midwest from ca. 4000 - 2000 BC. The park is for day use only.

Enjoy a 1-mile loop through forest and meadow with hundreds of candles lining the trail. Following the ski or hike, participants can enjoy a bonfire with refreshments in the warming shelter. Co-sponsored by the Friends of Peninsula State Park. Pets are not allowed at the event. Event will be cancelled if weather is severe. A state park vehicle admission sticker is required and can be purchased at the park headquarters or self-registration station. A trail pass is not required for this event. Considered Wisconsin's most complete park, Peninsula offers 468 campsites, three group camps, a summer theater, an 18-hole golf course, sand beach, bike trails, a lighthouse and eight miles of Door County shoreline. The rollicking waves that skip towards Peninsula's sky high bluffs are part of the Niagara Escarpment.

Cross-country ski or hike in the Kettle Moraine State Forest-Northern Unit by candlelight. At the bonfire join fellow hikers and skiers for hot drinks and snacks provided by the Friends of the Kettle Moraine. The trail is perfect for novice skiers with no steep hills or sharp turns. The Zillmer shelter building will be open, lit, and heated. Location: Zillmer Trail Area (located off County Road SS between County Road G and Hwy 67 near New Prospect). Cross-country ski or hike in the Kettle Moraine State Forest-Northern Unit by candlelight. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission sticker is required.

The Kettle Moraine Northern Unit is comprised of about 30,000 acres stretching 30 miles across Sheboygan, Fond du Lac and Washington Counties. The forest is managed for multiple use, including recreation management, sustainable forest products, water quality and soil protection, terrestrial and aquatic wildlife, native biological diversity and aesthetics.

Mirror Lake SP information

This park is named for its centerpiece, a lake which often is so Locationcalm that not a ripple marks its surface. The lake reflects a wooded shoreline with cliffs up to 50 feet high, a swimming beach, and wetlands that are home to a variety of wildlife. The park's 2,200 acres includes several picnic areas, wooded campsites, summer rentals, and a cabin for people with disabilities.

27th Annual Flambeau River Candlelight Ski and Hike

Get outside this winter and enjoy lighted trails at the Flambeau River State Forest. A 1.8 kilometer loop of the Flambeau Hills Trail will be groomed, tracked and lit with more than 600 candles. The trail winds through the heart of the forest and is wide enough for diagonal striders and skate skiers. Hiking and snowshoeing are also permitted on the trail during this event. Picnic tables and a large grill will be available, with refreshments/snacks provided. There will also be large warming fires maintained throughout the night. Trail pass fees are waived during the event. This event will take place regardless of snow conditions - if there is no snow, take a candlelight walk. Photo by Jim Kuchler. Flambeau River SF information

The forest offers a variety of recreational opportunities. Canoeing is the most popular activity on the forest. Different portions of the river offer varying degrees of difficulty. The North Fork is ideal for the novice, while South Fork is for the advanced paddler. Musky, sturgeon, trout, walleye, bass and panfish can be caught from the river as well as the lakes in the forest. The forest is open to public hunting for bear, waterfowl, deer and grouse, just to name a few.

Join forest staff and the Black River Forest Trail Foundation for a night of skiing, snowshoeing, hiking and fun! A 1.5-mile ski trail and a 1-mile snowshoe/hike trail will be lit with candle luminaries. Warm up around a large bonfire or in the heated shelter. Hot chocolate and hot dogs will be available for purchase. A raffle will be held with great prizes! Meet at the Smrekar shelter located 4 miles east of Millston off County Road O. This event will still be held as a hike/snowshoe if there is not enough snow for skiing.

29th Annual Candlelight Ski, Hike and Snowshoe

Experience winter beauty at Newport State Park! Ski, hike or snowshoe a 1.2-mile wooded trail lit with glowing candlelight. The trail starts at the Picnic Area parking lot (Lot #3). At the end of the lit trail, participants will find the shelter building complete with an outdoor bonfire, fireplace to warm up by, and refreshments. Grills will be available for anyone who wishes to bring along the makings for a picnic supper or marshmallow roast. The event is free, but a Wisconsin State Park Vehicle Admission Sticker is required. This event will still be held as a hike/snowshoe if there is not enough snow for skiing.

Copper Falls SP information

Ancient lava flows, deep gorges, and spectacular waterfalls make Copper Falls one of Wisconsin's most scenic parks. Log buildings built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s add to the park's charm. There is plenty to do; hiking, bicycling, picnicking, fishing and swimming. The North Country National Scenic Trail passes through Copper Falls State Park.

Join us for a beautiful winter evening of cross-country skiing. Two miles of groomed trails will be lit with hundreds of glowing luminaries. When you are done, warm up by the bonfire and enjoy refreshments sold by the Friends of Lake Kegonsa State Park. There is no fee for this event, but a valid park admission sticker is required. Sorry, no pets, hiking or snowshoeing are allowed on groomed ski trails. This event is weather and snow conditions permitting.

Lake Kegonsa State Park offers a natural, peaceful setting beside a glacier-hewed lake. The lake offers swimming, fishing, water-skiing, sailing and motor boating. The lake covers 3,209 acres and is more than 30 feet deep. Park visitors enjoy the lake's excellent fishing. 29th Annual Pike Lake Candlelight Ski and Hike

Hike, snowshoe or cross-country ski two 1-mile loops lit by more than 350 luminaries. Warm up at the North Shelter and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and snacks at the bonfire outside. Northern Cross Astronomy will have their telescopes out to view the crystal-clear winter sky. Pets on a leash are welcome. A vehicle admission sticker is required.

Kettle Moraine SF - Pike Lake Unit information

The Pike Lake Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest is in the middle of the Kettle Moraine, a strip of glacial landforms which extends through southeastern Wisconsin to Lake Winnebago. The forest is named after the 522-acre, spring-fed kettle: Pike Lake. Powder Hill, a large glacial kame, provides the opportunity for a great hike and view. Visitors can enjoy camping, swimming, hiking, fishing, picnicking, and much more within the forest.

Richard Bong SRA information

Once designated to be a jet fighter base, Richard Bong State Recreation Area is fittingly named after Major Richard I. Bong, a Poplar, WI native who was America's leading air ace during World War II. The air base was abandoned three days before concrete was to be poured for a 12,500-foot runway. Local citizens had the foresight to protect this open space for future generations.

Brule River Candlelight Ski and Snowshoe

Candles will light 5 kilometers of the After Hours Ski Trails including part of the snowshoe trail. Grills, picnic tables and a bonfire will be provided. New comers to the Afterhours Trail will find a beautiful warming chalet where hot chocolate and hot apple cider will be provided. This is always a fun event and families are strongly encouraged to attend. Trail passes are not required for this event, which is sponsored by the Brule River State Forest with volunteer assistance from the Brule Valley Ski Club [exit DNR].

Join us at Merrick State Park for our fourth annual Winterfest! Fun activities are planned throughout the night! Try snowshoeing or hiking on a trail lit by hundreds of glowing luminaries. Professor Jennifer Anderson, from Winona State University, and geo-science students, will have telescopes for viewing of the night sky. Warm up by the bonfire, enjoy hot chocolate, have a hot dog or make a s'more. Some snowshoes will be on hand for visitors to borrow. If there's not enough snow for snowshoeing, event will be held as a hike. In the event of inclement weather this program will be cancelled. Park stickers are required and will be available for purchase. Please, no pets. Meet at the Nature Center (near the playground). Sponsored by the Merrick T.U.R.T.L.E.S (the park Friends Group).

Join us at Gov. Thompson State Park for a fun-filled evening of candlelit skiing and hiking. Warming fires and hot chocolate provided! Meet at the Woods Lake Picnic Area. The park and trails will be lit by candle luminaries and accented with ice sculptures. Skiers can take an easy 1-mile loop candlelit trail groomed for both classic (diagonal striding) and skate skiing as it weaves through the woods. Hikers are welcome to hike another 1-mile candlelit trail with scenic views over Woods Lake. Hikers, snowshoers and pets are not allowed on the ski trail, but are welcome on the hiking trail. Original ice sculptures will be on display.  Vehicle admission (park sticker) is required and can be purchased at the park office.

Enjoy a winter night at Pattison State Park! Glowing luminaries will line your path for classic skiing and hiking/snowshoeing and there will also be a sledding hill. The Friends of Pattison and Amnicon Falls will be providing crafts in the Historic CCC Shelter Building where there will be two giant fireplaces for warming up by and a place to cook hot dogs or marshmallows for s'more's. The Friends will provide all the supplies for s'mores, plus chili, hot cocoa, cookies and coffee. This event is for the whole family!  A vehicle admission sticker will be required.

Pattison SP information

Pattison State Park features the highest waterfalls in Wisconsin and the fourth highest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains. Big Manitou Falls is 165 feet high, and Twin Little Manitou Falls is 31 feet high. This 1,436-acre park also has a lake with a beach, a nature center, camping, nine miles of hiking trails and abundant wildlife.

For the third year in a row, hardy northerners will cure their cabin fever at this winter Urban Candlelight Hike on the Hank Aaron State Trail in Three Bridges Park. Two miles of candlelit trails on the Hank Aaron State Trail - this event will take place with or without snow! Roaring campfires! From 5:30-7:30 p.m. there will be free fat tire bike demos on site to try and testf. This is your chance to get on a fat tire bike. All ages and abilities are welcome to stop by and check one out. See why fat tire cyclists have more fun all year round! There are additional activities for thos who purchase a "Fun Pass." Hank Aaron ST information

Named in honor of baseball legend Hank Aaron, this trail provides a continuous connection between Milwaukee's Miller Park Stadium and the Lake Michigan lakefront, as well as providing connections to famous Milwaukee landmarks such as the historic Ward Theatre on the grounds of the National Soldiers Home, the Wisconsin State Fair Park and the Pettit National Ice Center. Eventually the trail will connect with the Oak Leaf Trail near the Milwaukee/Waukesha county line and run along the southern edge of the Milwaukee County Zoo.

Candlelight Snowshoe Hike

The Friends of Rib Mountain State Park invite the public to explore Rib Mountain State Park on snowshoes. There will be hot chocolate, hot cider, and special goodies, as well as marshmallows to roast around the campfire. Start your hike at the new Friends Gathering Space, just past the Park office. Some snowshoes are available to borrow but we suggest you bring your own snowshoes if you have them. Donations to cover costs are welcome. A park annual or daily admission sticker is required. Rib Mountain SP information

This billion-year-old hill is one of the oldest geological formations on earth. Rib Mountain State Park is a premier day-use facility with picnicking, hiking trails and a reservable amphitheater. The top of the 60-foot observation tower offers spectacular views of the Wausau area and Wisconsin River. Granite Peak Ski Area is on the north face of the mountain and offers downhill skiing and snowboarding during winter.
