Going Batty!

Time: 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Activities: Arts and Crafts, Drop-in Program, Educational Programs, Nature study, Wildlife conservation
Location: Peninsula SP

Meet at Welckers Shelter Building. Come "hang around" with the park naturalist at a program that begins with family friendly activities: a game of "Bat and Moth" and a Going Batty quiz. Learn why Peninsula's cave bats have declined by 90 percent and the role park bluffs play in bat survival. Participants have the option to stay past sunset to participate in a bat count (about 9:30 p.m.). Will Peninsula's remaining two dozen bats emerge after sunset to feast on mosquitoes?

Naturalist Led Kayak Tour

Time: 9:45 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Activities: Canoeing/kayaking, Outdoor activity, Outdoor skills
Location: Peninsula SP

Must pre-register at Nature Center. Limited to fifteen participants. Arrive at Nicolet Beach Rentals by 9:45 a.m. Naturalist-led tour features Peninsula history and ecology. Two-mile paddle along Peninsula's beautiful shore. Beginners welcome. A lifeguard is not on duty. Youth age 17 and younger must be in a kayak with an adult. $24 plus tax per person payable at Nicolet Beach Concessions. Tour may be cancelled due to weather or high winds.

International Mud Day with the Dirt Witch

Time: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Celebrate International Mud Day by visiting with the Dirt Witch at Peninsula State Park. Drop by the Nature Center any time from 11 a.m. to Noon to "get your nature play on."  Meet the Dirt Witch and sample Dirt Stew (while supplies last). Create mud art, learn how soil forms, and hear the truth about worms. International Mud Day began in 2008 in Nepal and Australia and spread across the world as a way to get kids outside having fun!

Live Raptors at Peninsula State Park

Gettysburg Address and Flag Raising - Plus Smokey Bear!

Time: 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Help us raise the stars and stripes, then enjoy a recitation of the Gettysburg Address by Charles Dickson. Afterwards, Smokey Bear, America's firefighting bear, will arrive to "shake paws". Kids who recite Smokey's fire safety message will receive a prize. This program is free and open to the public but a state park vehicle sticker is required.

Universe in the Park is a popular outreach program of the UW-Madison Astronomy Department and is predicated on a very simple idea: the best environment in which to introduce the general public to astronomy is outside under dark skies. The UitP session begins with a 20-30 minute talk and slide presentation covering a broad view of astronomy and recent astronomical news. Following the presentation, a telescope is set up to view whatever astronomical objects are available. Question and answer period follows around the telescope.

Playing with Shakespeare: Children's Workshop

The Summit Players are a traveling theatre company who present short, fun, accessible and free Shakespeare workshops and performances to audiences around the state. This year, join the Players as they perform a mini-version of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. The production is 'Shakespeare out of a trunk,' with minimal set, costumes and props and a focus on actors, as per the style of Shakespeare's time. Prior to the performance, company members will lead a 45-minute children's workshop. 5:30 p.m. workshop; 7 p.m. performance.
