Universe in the Park

Time: 8:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Activities: Astronomy, Educational Programs, Night event, Outdoor activity
Location: Mirror Lake SP

Universe in the Park (UitP) is a popular outreach program of the UW-Madison Astronomy Department and is predicated on a very simple idea: the best environment in which to introduce the general public to astronomy is outside under dark skies. The UitP session begins with a 20-30 minute talk and slide presentation covering a broad view of astronomy and recent astronomical news. Following the presentation, a telescope is set up to view whatever astronomical objects are available. Question and answer period follows around the telescope. Meet at the Beach Shelter at the Beach Picnic Area.

Kayaking Tour of Mirror Lake

Time: 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Activities: Canoeing/kayaking, Outdoor activity
Location: Mirror Lake SP

This fun, 90-minute kayaking trip will cover park geology, history and points of interest. We'll start at the boat landing and paddle to the dam. Kayak rentals are available for a fee at the boat landing and are first-come, first-served. Please arrive early to get set up with a kayak if you need to rent one. Tour will start at 10 a.m.

Drop in at the Beach: Animal Tracks of Mirror Lake

Drop by and learn about the many different types of animals that live in or have lived in Mirror Lake State Park. Make an animal track print and see all the different animal tracks of Mirror Lake. Meet at the beach area.

Bring a blanket or a lawn chair to enjoy this free family event sponsored by the Friends of Mirror Lake State Park. The summer concert series takes place on several Saturdays during summer at the beautiful Mirror Lake amphitheater. Concerts are free, goodwill donations would be appreciated with all donations directly helping fund park programs and projects. Please arrive early for parking and a short easy hike to the amphitheater. No Pets are allowed in the amphitheater. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission sticker is required and can be purchased at the park office.

Playing with Shakespeare: Get Outside with Will Children's Workshop

Think Shakespeare is old and boring? Think again! Join the Summit Players for 45 minutes of fun and brain acrobatics! Play some games, work with some text, and explore the natural world. Learn how Shakespeare used nature in his plays and why his characters talk the way they do. Shed any iambic penta-jitters, then join us for the show! 5:30 p.m. workshop; 7 p.m. performance.

Shakespeare in the Park "Twelfth Night"

Time: 7:00 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.

Location: Mirror Lake SP

The Summit Players are a traveling theatre company who present short, accessible, free Shakespeare workshops and performances to audiences around the state of Wisconsin. Summit Players shows are produced with new cuttings of Shakespeare's scripts that become tight, 75-minute shows of mayhem, character switches, and hilarity. The production is 'Shakespeare out of a trunk,' with minimal set, costumes and props and a focus on actors, as per the style of Shakespeare's time. Prior to the performance, company members will lead a 45-minute children's workshop. 5:30 p.m. workshop; 7 p.m. performance.
