Monarch Butterflies

Special guest, Elaine Zarcone, will be sharing her experiences with monarchs. She will share their lifecycle, the migration paths for the winter months, and provide handouts on how you can help them with special plants in your own back yard or park. Elaine has also had the privilege of helping to "tag" and track monarchs. Come find out that is done on such a small creature. Meet at the beach area.  Rain site: park office.

Geocaching - Family Fun

Time: 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Let's talk about adventure, exploration, and the how to's of geocaching. Did you know most state parks offer GPS units for check out and have many geocaches within the park boundaries? Let's get out there and explore. Handouts for how and where to register for an account as well as cell phone apps for GPS will be provided. We will do a hands-on demonstration of how the apps work and we will find a geocache hidden near the amphitheater. Afterwards, stay for awhile and enjoy the campfire and s'mores.

Wildflowers, Pollinators and Invasives

Location: Mirror Lake SP

What wildflowers can you name? Who are all the pollinators? What are invasive species? What harm do they cause? Can you find some examples of all these on the Newport Trail and Lakeview Trails? Complete the Wildflower, pollinator, invasives bingo cards for prizes. Stop by the Naturalist at the beach for some information and bingo card. In the event of rain, this program will be held in the park office.

Music in the Park: Tim Southwick Johnson

Join the Friends of Mirror Lake as they bring Tim Southwick Johnson to the outdoor amphitheater stage as part of the Music in the Park summer concert series. Tim Southwick Johnson is an accomplished performer on acoustic guitar, mandolin, tenor guitar, ukulele and harmonica. His original songs run the gamut from fun story songs to romping fingerstyle instrumentals. Tim even brings the songwriting process to the stage composing "on the fly". Event is free. A valid park vehicle sticker is required to enter the park. Bring your own chairs or sit on our rock seating. Bug spray suggested.

Playing with Shakespeare: Children's Workshop

The Summit Players are a traveling theatre company who present short, fun, accessible and free Shakespeare workshops and performances to audiences around the state. This year, join the Players as they perform a mini-version of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. The production is 'Shakespeare out of a trunk,' with minimal set, costumes and props and a focus on actors, as per the style of Shakespeare's time. Prior to the performance, company members will lead a 45-minute children's workshop. 1 p.m. workshop; 2:30 p.m. performance.
