Discovery Bird Walk

Time: 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
Activities: Birding, Nature study, Outdoor activity, Walk
Location: Kohler-Andrae SP

Meet Master Naturalists Janet & Andy Raddatz at the Friends Pond parking lot. The walk will start at Friends Pond, then go east on Old Park Rd to the closed gate and then back to the pond while searching for birds along the way. The walk will then continue on the Ancient Shores Trail. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. Bring insect repellant, sunscreen, binoculars and field guides if available. The 1.75-mile walk is best for age 8 and older; children must be accompanied by an adult. No pets please. Vehicles need a state park admission sticker.

Woodland Walk

Time: 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Activities: Hike, Outdoor activity, Tree study, Walk
Location: Kohler-Andrae SP

Hike the Woodland Dunes Trail with Master Naturalist Karen Merlau. Learn to identify trees, find out the differences in types of trees, how they grow and how to tell their age. Meet at the trailhead near the playground. This is a great hike for the family; children must be accompanied by an adult. Bring insect repellent, a bottle of water and wear comfortable shoes for the hour-long hike. No pets allowed.

Night Hike

Master naturalist Jim Buchholz will lead a hike along the Woodland Dunes Nature Trail to experience what can be heard and "seen" in the dark of the night. Family friendly hike: children must be accompanied by an adult. Bring insect repellent and wear comfortable shoes. Meet near the outdoor shelter in the south picnic area, lot 8. No pets allowed.

Join master naturalist Karen Merlau and discover the many wildflowers growing along the Black River Trail. As the seasons change, so does the variety of wildflowers. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. Bring insect repellant, sunscreen, binoculars and field guides if available. The hike will last at least an hour. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at Black River Trail parking Lot. Please, no pets on this walk. All vehicles will need a state park admission sticker.

International Migratory Bird Day

Time: 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Join Sheboygan County Audubon for the following birding opportunities:

8 a.m.-2 p.m. Big Sit - Anyone who likes birds is welcome to come to identify the many bird species migrating through the park. Bring your own lawn chairs, binoculars and field guides. Come and go as you wish.

8 a.m. Bird Banding -Dr. Sheldon Cooper of UW-Oshkosh will set up mist nets near the shrub areas. Join him as he checks the nets and brings birds back to identify, measure and band before releasing them. This is a unique opportunity to see birds up close.

Bird Walk - will take place once banding is complete.Meet the group in the picnic area just off Lot 8.No pets allowed; children must be accompanied by an adult. Vehicle admission pass required.

Please note: Sheboygan County Audubon Society will make every attempt to run the event, but please be aware that times might get cut short depending on the weather.

National Public Lands Day

Bats and Humans Need Each Other

Bats are some of the best friend's humans ever had. Unfortunately, many American bats are in decline. Janet Raddatz, master naturalist, shares her knowledge of the creatures that affect the quality of our lives. Then join Janet and Andy for a walk around the park with a bat detector allowing everyone to eavesdrop on the world of bat communication. All ages welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult. Geocaching 101 Plus

Try another approach to geocaching using smart phones to find caches already located within Kohler-Andrae. Don't worry, Shari and Barb will still bring GPS units for those who do not have the latest phones or their own GPS unit. Meet them at the park amphitheater for a brief introduction and it is off in search of the caches. This is best for ages 10 and older, all children must be accompanied by an adult. No pets allowed.

Bring family land friends to enjoy a self-guided fall evening hike along a torch-lit trail. Visitors are asked to park in the picnic lots and walk to the outdoor shelter near parking lot P8. Master naturalist Chris Lilek will entertain with songs and stories around the campfire. Cider and snacks will be provided at the shelter. Children must be accompanied by an adult. No pets allowed.

Universe in the Park

Universe in the Park is a popular outreach program of the UW-Madison Astronomy Department and is predicated on a very simple idea: the best environment in which to introduce the public to astronomy is outside under dark skies. This program begins with a 20-30 minute talk and slide presentation covering a broad view of astronomy and recent astronomical news. Following the presentation, a telescope is set up to view whatever astronomical objects are available. Question and answer period follows around the telescope. No pets allowed. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at Sanderling Nature Center.

Fifteen Years Later: Living with the Emerald Ash Borer in Eastern Wisconsin

Emerald Ash Borer has now been present in Wisconsin for at least 15 years and we are currently seeing its peak impacts in Sheboygan County. This presentation by Bill McNee will discuss the history and spread of EAB in Wisconsin, what has been done to manage its impacts and what we are seeing in the forests after the larger ash trees have been killed. Meet at Sanderling Nature Center.
