Universe in the Park

Time: 8:45 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Activities: Astronomy, Night event, Outdoor activity
Location: Kohler-Andrae SP

Universe in the Park is a popular outreach program of the UW-Madison Astronomy Department and is predicated on a very simple idea: the best environment in which to introduce the public to astronomy is outside under dark skies. This program begins with a 20-30 minute talk and slide presentation covering a broad view of astronomy and recent astronomical news. Following the presentation, a telescope is set up to view whatever astronomical objects are available. Question and answer period follows around the telescope. No pets allowed. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at Sanderling Nature Center.

Discovery Bird Hike

Time: 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Activities: Birding, Hike, Outdoor activity, Wildlife study
Location: Kohler-Andrae SP

Master Naturalists Janet & Andy Raddatz will lead a bird hike at Kohler-Andrae. Meet them at Black River Trail, parking lot P, to search for birds in the park. The hike will last about 2 hours. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. Bring binoculars and bird guides if available. The 2-mile hike is best for age 8 and older; children must be accompanied by an adult. Please, no pets on this hike. All vehicles will need a state park sticker.

Free Kids Fishing Clinic

Time: 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Activities: Children's program, Fishing, Outdoor activity, Outdoor skills
Location: Kohler-Andrae SP

Classes taught hourly from 10 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Rod & reel casting, knot tying, basic fishing equipment, Ink fish printing, fish cleaning, and fish ID and regulations will be covered. Some fishing equipment will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, but bring your own rod and reel if possible. Open to children 15 years and younger; children must be accompanied by an adult. Light refreshments will be offered. Pre-registration encouraged, call (920) 451-4080, but walk-ins will be accepted. Free park admission for State Parks Open House weekend. Meet at Friends Fishing Pond on Old Park Rd.

Music in the Park: Brett Hall

Kohler-Andrae welcomes the return of singer, songwriter, entertainer and recording artist Brett Hall for an evening of John Denver. These days he has combined his love of camping and enjoying the outdoors with his love of music by playing stage and amphitheaters in Wisconsin state parks. Family-friendly program; children must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the park amphitheater; in inclement weather, program will be moved to Sanderling Nature Center.

Wisconsin Frogs: Sunset Serenade

Each spring Wisconsin's frogs and toads announce their presence with a musical choir. Come learn about these amphibians without tails and the songs they sing. Of the 12 species in Wisconsin, 9 reside in Sheboygan County. Master Naturalist Janet Raddatz will share her knowledge of these special creatures. Meet at Sanderling Nature Center. Program is recommended for those ages 10 and older; children must be accompanied by an adult. No pets allowed.

Join in the fun of making and decorating a pocket sled kite during one of the workshop sessions and then head right out to fly the kite on the beach. This workshop is best for children age 12 and under; younger children will need parental help. Children must be accompanied by an adult. A fee of $5 per kite kit will be collected at the workshop. Call the park office to sign up for a session as  a limited number of spaces will be available at each session. Meet at the bathhouse breezeway; parking available in Lot P6. No pets allowed. Two sessions today at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Buzz on Plants and Pollination

Pollination happens all around us! Join a Riveredge naturalist to take a closer look at the animals that make this process possible both night and day. Tools will be utilized to zoom in on plant parts and flowers themselves. Participants will be challenged to design their very own plant to withstand various environmental conditions.
