Weekend Wild Walks

Time: 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Activities: Hike, Nature study, Outdoor activity, Walk
Location: Devil's Lake SP

Explore Devil's Lake with the naturalist and uncover the hidden gems and overlooked forests and fields in the park. These guided hikes will happen each Saturday morning during March. Each walk will last 2 to 2.5 hours and the terrain will vary each week from easy to difficult.

This week's walk will be through Uplands Trail. March weather can vary and so can the trail conditions, so be prepared for ice, snow, and mud. This is a 4 mile hike up the bluff from Steinke Basin. This is a medium to difficult walk. Meet at the Steinke Basin Parking Lot.

Seasonal Scavenger Hunt

Time: 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Activities: Children's program, Drop-in Program, Scavenger hunt
Location: Devil's Lake SP

Back again this spring! Families will receive a set of clues to go on a scavenger hunt. Each family will need to work as a team as they hike along the trails to complete this challenge! Some challenges require a GPS unit (provided by the Nature Center) and make sure to bring your camera! You'll receive a small prize for completing one of the challenges. Pick up your clues at the Nature Center, then head out for an adventure!

Get Your Bike Ready for Spring

Join the bike specialists from Wildside Adventure Sports to find out what you need to do to get your bike ready for the season. Bring your bike for some hands-on experience with their professional bike mechanics. They'll cover basic bike maintenance, how to fix a flat, how to keep your breaks and gears lubed, and much more. If the weather is bad, the rain date will be Saturday, April 27 Meet at the Nature Center's Parking Lot.

Family Wild Day Out

Switch off your phones and bring your children to spend the day in the forest to discover and explore a whole new wild world - all ages welcome! Bring outdoor clothes suitable for all weather, a packed lunch, and lots of enthusiasm! We'll provide everything else. Participants will play nature-based games, create woodland crafts, light fires, cook over a fire, make dens and shelters, and most importantly have fun! Join us for a great family day out full of fun, imagination, play and adventure. Meet at the Nature Center.

Early Morning Bird Hike

Time: 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Activities: Birding, Hike, Nature study
Location: Devil's Lake SP

Join the naturalist to discover what birds have migrated back. We'll hike the Steinke Basin/Johnson Moraine trails to look for spring migrants. These trails are relatively flat, with small hills. The trails can be muddy in the spring, so make sure to wear boots or shoes that can get wet. Bring a pair of binoculars or borrow a pair to use on the hike. This program is best for adults and older children. Meet at the Steinke Basin Parking Lot.

Want to try fishing but don't know what to do? Join our Learn to Fish program and we'll show you how! We'll have fun activities that will teach you the basics before sending you off to catch some fish. If you are 16 and older, you'll need a fishing license. We'll supply all of the equipment and bait. This program's activities are designed with families in mind, but open to "kids" of all ages. Meet at the north shore boat launch.

If you are a frog fanatic, you will want to join us for this nocturnal trip to the park's kettle ponds. We'll listen for spring peepers, wood frogs, and chorus frogs. We'll also listen for other night sounds as we hike the Johnson Moraine Trail. Bring your flashlight as we'll be hiking right around dusk. Meet at the Steinke Basin parking lot.

Spring Letterboxing Adventure

Location: Devil's Lake SP

Letterboxing combines elements of hiking and treasure hunting into an activity that the whole family can enjoy. Participants seek out hidden letterboxes by following clues and recording their discovery in their personal journal stamping with the rubber stamp you get to make! We'll have journals for you to take with you or you can bring your own. Stop at the Nature Center to pick up the clues. This is a great program for all ages. Meet at the Nature Center.

Work Play Earth Day - Celebrate EARTH DAY by volunteering at your State Parks!

Volunteer and help work on the trails at Devil's Lake. We'll work on blocking off "non-official" trails on East and West Bluff trails. All tools will be provided, but you may want to bring a pair of work gloves and water along too. Stay for the whole time or come when you can to help. Meet at the Nature Center. Supported by the Friends of Devil's Lake State Park.

Lawn Chair Bird Watching - Birds and Bagels

All you need is a comfortable lawn chair, a pair of binoculars, and a thermos of your favorite coffee for this morning bird watch. We'll "park" our lawn chair by the lake, along the south shore and watch for ducks, eagles, osprey, warblers and more. This year the Friends group will be supplying bagels for us to enjoy. This program is best for adults and children 10 and older, but open to all ages. Meet at the south shore boat launch parking lot.

Explore the Night Sky

Join the Madison Astronomy Society (MAS) to learn about the night sky. MAS will have several telescopes set up and show you cool features about the moon, point you towards some winter constellations. This is more of an informal program where you can come anytime, and the MAS volunteers will help you get to know the night sky. This program is best for kids 7 and older and adults, but open to "kids" of all ages. Meet near the north shore boat launch parking lot, just behind the Rock Elm Shelter.

2019 Big Ten Rowing Championships

The 2019 Big Ten Rowing Championships will be held at Devil's Lake on May 19. The 2019 event marks the first time the Big Ten rowing championships will be held outside of Indianapolis since 2010. Visitors can enjoy great viewing from all around the lake.
