Poetry Trail Hike - Poems of the Moon and Dark Sky

Newport SP information

Newport State Park, northeast of Ellison Bay, is Wisconsin's only formally-designated wilderness park. With 2,373 acres and 11 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, the park offers quiet alternatives to bustling Door County. Explore 30 miles of hiking trails with hike-in campsites. There are evergreen and hardwood forests, wetlands and upland meadows.

Kettle Moraine SF - Pike Lake Unit information

The Pike Lake Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest is in the middle of the Kettle Moraine, a strip of glacial landforms which extends through southeastern Wisconsin to Lake Winnebago. The forest is named after the 522-acre, spring-fed kettle: Pike Lake. Powder Hill, a large glacial kame, provides the opportunity for a great hike and view. Visitors can enjoy camping, swimming, hiking, fishing, picnicking, and much more within the forest.

Mirror Lake SP information

This park is named for its centerpiece, a lake which often is so Locationcalm that not a ripple marks its surface. The lake reflects a wooded shoreline with cliffs up to 50 feet high, a swimming beach, and wetlands that are home to a variety of wildlife. The park's 2,200 acres includes several picnic areas, wooded campsites, summer rentals, and a cabin for people with disabilities.

Night Hike

Master naturalist Jim Buchholz will lead a half mile hike along the Woodland Dunes Trail to experience what can be heard and "seen" in the dark of the night. Family-friendly hike; children must be accompanied by an adult. Meet near the outdoor shelter in the south picnic area. No pets allowed.

Universe in the Park

Universe in the Park is a popular outreach program of the UW-Madison Astronomy Department and is predicated on a very simple idea: the best environment in which to introduce the general public to astronomy is outside under dark skies. The program begins with a 20-30 minute talk and slide presentation covering a broad view of astronomy and recent astronomical news. Following the presentation, a telescope is set up to view whatever astronomical objects are available. Question and answer period follows around the telescope. If there is rain, the presentation will be moved to the Nature Center. Meet at the Northern Lights Amphitheater.

Kettle Moraine SF - Southern Unit information

More than 22,000 acres of glacial hills, kettles, lakes, prairie restoration sites, pine woods and hardwood forests can be found in the Southern Unit, making this a popular area for a wide variety of visitors. The Forest is 30 miles long, extending from the village of Dousman, almost to the city of Whitewater. The forest headquarters is 3 miles west of the village of Eagle on State Highway 59.

Tour the Seth Peterson Cottage

Nestled in the woods of the state park on a cliff overlooking Mirror Lake sits the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Seth Peterson Cottage. The Seth Peterson Cottage Conservancy volunteers will take a guided tour of the cottage and share its history. From its commission to the State Park purchase to the beautiful restoration. Tours are approximately 20 minutes in length with the last tour starting at 3:30 p.m. Admission to the cottage tour is $5 per person with the proceeds going to the SPCC for continued upkeep of the cottage and park support. The cottage is located just west of the Park Office at E9982 Fern Dell Road, look for the red gate. For more information you can visit their website at sethpeterson.org [Exit DNR].
