Richard Bong SRA information

Once designated to be a jet fighter base, Richard Bong State Recreation Area is fittingly named after Major Richard I. Bong, a Poplar, WI native who was America's leading air ace during World War II. The air base was abandoned three days before concrete was to be poured for a 12,500-foot runway. Local citizens had the foresight to protect this open space for future generations.

Solving the Mysteries of Hibernation Evening with Nature Program

Many animals spend the winter hibernating to avoid the season's hardships. Join Hannah V. Carey, Ph.D. , Professor of Comparative Biosciences and Director of Biotron Laboratory at UW-Madison,as she explains the mysteries of hibernation and the new discoveries made by scientists. She will share how these findings may benefit humans. This program is most appropriate for people over the age of 10 years old. Kettle Moraine SF - Northern Unit information

The Kettle Moraine Northern Unit is comprised of about 30,000 acres stretching 30 miles across Sheboygan, Fond du Lac and Washington Counties. The forest is managed for multiple use, including recreation management, sustainable forest products, water quality and soil protection, terrestrial and aquatic wildlife, native biological diversity and aesthetics.

The Singing Forest: Elk Bugling with Laine Stowell

The forest offers a variety of recreational opportunities. Canoeing is the most popular activity on the forest. Different portions of the river offer varying degrees of difficulty. The North Fork is ideal for the novice, while South Fork is for the advanced paddler. Musky, sturgeon, trout, walleye, bass and panfish can be caught from the river as well as the lakes in the forest. The forest is open to public hunting for bear, waterfowl, deer and grouse, just to name a few.

Horicon Marsh Education Center information

Horicon Marsh has been formally recognized as a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention of the United Nations. This renowned marsh is now home to the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center. The Wildlife Education Program has been conducted at the marsh since the mid-1980s. This program focuses on the abundant wildlife resources of the marsh, their ecology and applied management.

Full Moon at the Dark Sky Park

Join the park naturalist on this night hike. We'll let our eyes adjust to the moonlight and hike the 2 mile Monarch Trail, watching and listening for the sights and sounds of the night. With 2,373 acres and 11 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, the park offers quiet alternatives to bustling Door County. Explore 30 miles of hiking trails with hike-in campsites. Endurance Challenge Race at Ottawa Lake and the Ice Age Trail

The North Face Endurance Challenge returns to Kettle Moraine State Forest at the Ottawa Lake Campground and Ice Age Trail on Saturday/Sunday, Sept. 14-15. A state park vehicle admission sticker is required by all participants and spectators. This large running event will limit the amount of parking available at the beach, boat launch, and picnic areas at Ottawa Lake. The largest crowds of people will be early in the morning until early afternoon each day.

Kettle Moraine SF - Southern Unit information

More than 22,000 acres of glacial hills, kettles, lakes, prairie restoration sites, pine woods and hardwood forests can be found in the Southern Unit, making this a popular area for a wide variety of visitors. The Forest is 30 miles long, extending from the village of Dousman, almost to the city of Whitewater. The forest headquarters is 3 miles west of the village of Eagle on State Highway 59.

Women's Walking and Wellness Program

Spend time in nature, get healthy, and train to walk the Empowered Women's Half-Marathon or 5k (Saturday, September 28) or a Willow River Trail Run--a 6.6k, 10.6k, or half-marathon-(Saturday, October 12). Weekly walking groups begin Saturday, June 8 at 8:30 a.m. at Willow River State Park. In addition to weekly walking groups, monthly programs--including yoga, healthy eating and meal planning, local foods, and other wellness programs--will be offered at the nature center.

This program is funded by an Allina Neighborhood Health Connection Grant to Gateway Arts and Wellness and is available to up to 10 community members, free of charge. Participants must commit to participate in at least 10 of the 20 sessions, which run Saturdays June 8 - October 19, 2019. Most sessions run from 8:30-10:30 a.m.

Ink Fish Printing

Every is invited to try the ancient art of "Gyotaku" (guy-yo-tah-koo) or ink fish printing. Paper, a bandana and all supplies will be available, or bring a t-shirt to print on instead of paper. This billion-year-old hill is one of the oldest geological formations on earth. Rib Mountain State Park is a premier day-use facility with picnicking, hiking trails and a reservable amphitheater. The top of the 60-foot observation tower offers spectacular views of the Wausau area and Wisconsin River. Granite Peak Ski Area is on the north face of the mountain and offers downhill skiing and snowboarding during winter.

Echo Rock Hike

Come explore Echo Rock Trail and Ishnala Trail with the naturalist. Our stroll will provide scenic lookout points, hiking around Echo Rock, exploring the forest for wild flowers, fungi and native tree species. If we are lucky, we will see birds and insects. Our turn around point is a small spring fed stream where we have spotted dragonflies, damselflies and some whirligig water insects. We will meet at the top of the boat landing parking lot - watch for the sign that says "HIKE STARTS HERE".

Mirror Lake SP information

This park is named for its centerpiece, a lake which often is so Locationcalm that not a ripple marks its surface. The lake reflects a wooded shoreline with cliffs up to 50 feet high, a swimming beach, and wetlands that are home to a variety of wildlife. The park's 2,200 acres includes several picnic areas, wooded campsites, summer rentals, and a cabin for people with disabilities.
