Women's Walking and Wellness Program

Spend time in nature, get healthy, and train to walk the Empowered Women's Half-Marathon or 5k (Saturday, September 28) or a Willow River Trail Run--a 6.6k, 10.6k, or half-marathon-(Saturday, October 12). Weekly walking groups begin Saturday, June 8 at 8:30 a.m. at Willow River State Park. In addition to weekly walking groups, monthly programs--including yoga, healthy eating and meal planning, local foods, and other wellness programs--will be offered at the nature center.

This program is funded by an Allina Neighborhood Health Connection Grant to Gateway Arts and Wellness and is available to up to 10 community members, free of charge. Participants must commit to participate in at least 10 of the 20 sessions, which run Saturdays June 8 - October 19, 2019. Most sessions run from 8:30-10:30 a.m.

Willow River SP information

With nearly 3,000 acres of prairie, forests, and panoramic river scenery, Willow River State Park offers year-round recreation opportunities in western Wisconsin. The park is about five miles northeast of Hudson, and has a campground, a boat launch and a 400-foot beach and picnic area centered on 172-acre Little Falls Lake.

Newport Wilderness Days

This two-day event started in 1992 as a way for the members of Newport Wilderness Society, the park's friends group, to showcase this beautiful wilderness park. Volunteers lead hikes on Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend, covering many areas of interest. Activities on Saturday, Aug. 31 include:
  • 8:30 a.m. Coffee on the Beach - donated by Kick Ash Coffee. What a great way to start your day with a hot cup of coffee on the beach. Meet at the picnic area, Lot 3.
  • 10 a.m. Mushroom Hike with Charlotte Lukes - Charlotte has studying mushrooms for over 40 years. On this easy hike, Charlotte will share her vast knowledge of the fascinating world of fungi. Meet at Lot 3.
  • 1 p.m. Bug Walk - Join entomologist Dick Smythe as he explores the world of insects. Spend an hour learning about whatever "little critters" we find at Newport-spiders, butterflies, dragonflies, damselflies, and whatever else is out there. Bring a butterfly net if you have one. Meet at the Nature Center with a hike to follow.

Newport State Park, northeast of Ellison Bay, is Wisconsin's only formally-designated wilderness park. With 2,373 acres and 11 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, the park offers quiet alternatives to bustling Door County. Explore 30 miles of hiking trails with hike-in campsites. There are evergreen and hardwood forests, wetlands and upland meadows.

Extreme Saturday Morning

Calling all youth to come explore the extremes of nature by participating in the Wisconsin Explorers program! The program involves completing a required number of activities in one of three age appropriate books (ages 3-5; ages 6-8; and ages 9+) to earn a very cool patch. Get help from a naturalist who will work with youth on activities from one of the first four topic areas of the books. Locations: Picnic Shelters at Mauthe Lake Recreation Area (located off County Road GGG south of County Road SS near New Prospect) and Long Lake Recreation Area (located off Division Road north of County Road F near Dundee)

Kettle Moraine SF - Northern Unit information

The Kettle Moraine Northern Unit is comprised of about 30,000 acres stretching 30 miles across Sheboygan, Fond du Lac and Washington Counties. The forest is managed for multiple use, including recreation management, sustainable forest products, water quality and soil protection, terrestrial and aquatic wildlife, native biological diversity and aesthetics.

Morning Hike

Enjoy a guided morning hike with park naturalist Reed Cockrell. Meet at the north end of the pool parking lot by the Friends Shelter.

Morning hikes are held most Saturdays and Sundays from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Check with the park office to confirm dates and times and to see what topic will be covered.

Richard Bong SRA information

Once designated to be a jet fighter base, Richard Bong State Recreation Area is fittingly named after Major Richard I. Bong, a Poplar, WI native who was America's leading air ace during World War II. The air base was abandoned three days before concrete was to be poured for a 12,500-foot runway. Local citizens had the foresight to protect this open space for future generations.

Harrington Beach SP information

Harrington Beach State Park has more than a mile of beach along Lake Michigan. This 715-acre park also features a white cedar and hardwood swamp, old field grasslands with restored wetland ponds and a scenic limestone quarry lake. Camp, sunbathe, picnic, hike, bird watch, fish or practice astronomy. An observatory is open to the public for monthly viewings.

Perrot State Park, where the Trempealeau River meets the Mississippi River, offers breathtaking views from 500-foot bluffs. The river bank and surrounding wetlands provide wonderful habitat for the many migratory birds that travel through this area twice a year. Abbey Krumrie is a Winona native and graduated from University of Wisconsin Stevens Point with a B.S. in Biology. She was a staff member at the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, and then spent the last 4 years as Director of Education at the Raptor Education Group in Antigo, WI. She has recently moved back to our area, where she and her husband hope someday to start a raptor center. Come meet her and enjoy this fun and educational program!

Kettle Moraine SF - Southern Unit information

More than 22,000 acres of glacial hills, kettles, lakes, prairie restoration sites, pine woods and hardwood forests can be found in the Southern Unit, making this a popular area for a wide variety of visitors. The Forest is 30 miles long, extending from the village of Dousman, almost to the city of Whitewater. The forest headquarters is 3 miles west of the village of Eagle on State Highway 59.
