Race the Lake

Location: High Cliff SP

High Cliff State Park will take part in the annual Race the Lake event, a 100-mile bike race around the majestic Lake Winnebago. A state park vehicle admission sticker is required by all participants and spectators. Park visitors can expect minor traffic delays.

The race starts at Lakeside Park in Fond du Lac, and High Cliff State Park is the halfway point. For more information or to register, see the Race website.

High Cliff SP information

High Cliff State Park is the only state-owned recreational area on Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin's largest lake. The park gets its name from the limestone cliff of the Niagara Escarpment, which parallels the eastern shore of Lake Winnebago. The magnificent 12-foot statue of Winnebago Indian Chief Red Bird, standing high on a huge granite rock, overlooks the lake and is a popular destination in the park.

Sssssnakes Drop In at the Beach

Slithering across the ground with their tongues flicking, snakes arouse our curiosity or sometimes our fears. Uncover some truly astonishing facts about these legless reptiles and the habitats where they live to gain an appreciation of their role in nature. Everyone is invited to drop in for a few minutes or more than an hour for some nature fun. Adults are encouraged to participate with their children. Kettle Moraine SF - Northern Unit information

The Kettle Moraine Northern Unit is comprised of about 30,000 acres stretching 30 miles across Sheboygan, Fond du Lac and Washington Counties. The forest is managed for multiple use, including recreation management, sustainable forest products, water quality and soil protection, terrestrial and aquatic wildlife, native biological diversity and aesthetics.

Aztalan Guided Tour

Aztalan was a fortified town occupied by Native Americans between A.D. 1050 and 1200. It was the northern outpost of the speculator Mississippian Civilization that mysteriously vanished from the Upper Midwest after A.D. 1250. This tour will be led by archaeologist and Friends of Aztalan executive director, Robert Birmingham, co-author of Aztalan: Mysteries of An Ancient Indian Town. Sponsored by the Friends of Aztalan. Guided tours of Aztalan will be conducted every Sunday at 2 p.m. June through August. Group tours for any time can be arranged by calling Robert Birmingham at (608) 516-3421.

Aztalan State Park is a National Historic Landmark and contains one of Wisconsin's most important archaeological sites. It showcases an ancient Middle-Mississippian village that thrived between A.D. 1000 and 1300. The people who settled Aztalan built large, flat-topped pyramidal mounds and a stockade around their village. Portions of the stockade and two mounds have been reconstructed in the park.

OutWiGo The Trails of Potawatomi Challenge Hike

As part of the OutWiGo statewide initiative to get outside with healthy activities, Challenge Hikes are getting us out on the trails, and we're not going to stop until we do them all! Join the park naturalist on this weekly hike. When we are done, we'll have hiked every trail in Potawatomi State Park. This week's hike will be the Hemlock Trail, a 2.6 mile loop. All are welcome to participate. Meet at the Nature Center.

Potawatomi SP information

Potawatomi State Park on the shore of Sturgeon Bay in southern Door County, has 1,200 acres of gently rolling upland terrain bordered by steep slopes and rugged limestone cliffs. The park is named in honor of the tribe that inhabited Green Bay's shores and islands when Europeans first settled the area. The tribe called themselves Bo-De-Wad-Me which means "keeper of the fire." Eventually the spelling and pronunciation were changed to Potawatomi.

Discovery Bird Walk

Meet Master Naturalists Janet & Andy Raddatz at the Friends Pond parking lot. The walk will start at Friends Pond, then go east on Old Park Rd to the closed gate and then back to the pond while searching for birds along the way. The walk will then continue on the Ancient Shores Trail. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. Bring insect repellant, sunscreen, binoculars and field guides if available. The 1.75-mile walk is best for age 8 and older; children must be accompanied by an adult. No pets please. Vehicles need a state park admission sticker.
