Geology and Nature Hike

Location: Mirror Lake SP

This is a 75-90 minute hike on the beautiful Echo Rock Trail. We will look at the different rock formations and the geologic history of the Mirror Lake area. Along the trail, we will also look at the types of plants, trees and wildlife. Meet at the boat landing parking lot.

Mirror Lake SP information

This park is named for its centerpiece, a lake which often is so Locationcalm that not a ripple marks its surface. The lake reflects a wooded shoreline with cliffs up to 50 feet high, a swimming beach, and wetlands that are home to a variety of wildlife. The park's 2,200 acres includes several picnic areas, wooded campsites, summer rentals, and a cabin for people with disabilities.

Full Moon Paddle

Discover the wonders of the backwaters of the Mississippi River by moonlight on this guided paddle. Bring your own canoe/kayak, or rent one of ours. Please call the park (608-687-4936) to reserve a canoe/kayak. Rentals are limited. Rental fee is $15. We will leave the boat landing promptly at 8:30 p.m., so get there early! Ages 10 and up, some canoeing/kayaking experience is advisable. This trip will last about two hours. If it rains or the Mississippi River levels are unsafe, this event will be cancelled. Vehicle admission sticker is required and can be purchased at the contact station. Meet at the South Boat Landing (near the South Campground).

Merrick SP information

Located along the lazy Mississippi River and surrounded by the hills of Wisconsin's Coulee Region, the 322-acre Merrick State Park is popular with anglers and boaters. The marshy backwaters are home to a variety of fish, birds, animals and plants. Rising and falling river levels, though controlled some by dams, are part of the natural environment.

Universe in the Park

Universe in the Park (UitP) is a popular outreach program of the UW-Madison Astronomy Department and is predicated on a very simple idea: the best environment in which to introduce the general public to astronomy is outside under dark skies. The UitP session begins with a 20-30 minute talk and slide presentation covering a broad view of astronomy and recent astronomical news. Following the presentation, a telescope is set up to view whatever astronomical objects are available. Question and answer period follows around the telescope. Meet at the Beach Area.

Guided Full Moon Paddle

Join us for a unique way to explore the lake - at night! We'll decorate our boats with glow sticks before launching out into the night. You'll need to bring your own kayak, canoe, or boat to participate. Please call to preregister, by calling the Nature Center at (608) 356-8301 Ext. 140, so we can have enough glow sticks. Meet at the North Shore Boat Launch.

With nearly 3,000 acres of prairie, forests, and panoramic river scenery, Willow River State Park offers year-round recreation opportunities in western Wisconsin. The park is about five miles northeast of Hudson, and has a campground, a boat launch and a 400-foot beach and picnic area centered on 172-acre Little Falls Lake.

Gotten Cabin Open House

Kettle Moraine SF - Southern Unit information

More than 22,000 acres of glacial hills, kettles, lakes, prairie restoration sites, pine woods and hardwood forests can be found in the Southern Unit, making this a popular area for a wide variety of visitors. The Forest is 30 miles long, extending from the village of Dousman, almost to the city of Whitewater. The forest headquarters is 3 miles west of the village of Eagle on State Highway 59.

Kettle Moraine SF - Northern Unit information

The Kettle Moraine Northern Unit is comprised of about 30,000 acres stretching 30 miles across Sheboygan, Fond du Lac and Washington Counties. Whitefish Dunes SP information

Whitefish Dunes State Park protects the fragile dune environment on the eastern Door County Peninsula. Stroll along Lake Michigan, watch waterfowl at Clark Lake, use the boardwalk to discover the wetlands or relax on one of the many trails throughout the forested sand dunes and beech forest. The park's nature center features year-round programs, exhibits and displays on ecology, geology and human history. Whitefish Dunes is a day-use park, there is no camping.

The MacKenzie Center, just 25 miles north of Madison, is one of the most diverse education centers in Wisconsin. With interpretive trails, exhibits, museums and programming available for school and youth groups, MacKenzie is a wonderful place to visit and learn about the natural world. The State Game Farm is connected to the MacKenzie Center and is adjacent to the arboretum on the western half of the property.
