Discovering Wildflowers

Join Master Naturalist Karen Doering and discover the many wildflowers growing along the Black River Trail. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. Bring insect repellant, sunscreen, binoculars and field guides if available. The hike will last at least an hour. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the Black River Trail parking lot. All vehicles will need a state park admission sticker.

Hartman Hiker Challenge: Oak Ridge/Ice Age Trail

OutWiGo The Trails of Newport Challenge Hikes

As part of the OutWiGo statewide initiative to get outside with healthy activities, Challenge Hikes are getting us out on the trails, and we're not going to stop until we do them all! Join the park naturalist on this weekly hike. We'll log hours and miles every week. When we are done, we'll have hiked every trail in Newport State Park, enjoying all it has to offer. We started with the shortest trail loop (1.2 mi.) and will end with the longest trail loop (7 mi.) on Aug. 22. On the last day, we'll tally our miles and enjoy a pot luck picnic together.This week's hike will be Newport/Ridge Trail, a 3 mile loop. All are welcome to participate. Meet at Lot 1.

Ink Fish Printing

Every is invited to try the ancient art of "Gyotaku" (guy-yo-tah-koo) or ink fish printing. Paper, a bandana and all supplies will be available, or bring a t-shirt to print on instead of paper. Horicon Marsh Education Center information

Horicon Marsh has been formally recognized as a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention of the United Nations. This renowned marsh is now home to the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center. The Wildlife Education Program has been conducted at the marsh since the mid-1980s. This program focuses on the abundant wildlife resources of the marsh, their ecology and applied management.

Richard Bong SRA information

Once designated to be a jet fighter base, Richard Bong State Recreation Area is fittingly named after Major Richard I. Bong, a Poplar, WI native who was America's leading air ace during World War II. The air base was abandoned three days before concrete was to be poured for a 12,500-foot runway. Local citizens had the foresight to protect this open space for future generations.

Come explore 2.5 miles of the Black Trail on this guided morning hike. We'll cover a number of topics including invasive species, wildflowers, tree identification, and native history. We'll also have a good chance of seeing wildlife since these are some of the least hiked trails of the park! Meet at the Amphitheater outside the Nature Center. A water bottle and closed toe shoes are recommended.

Kids Fishing Clinic
