Lawn Chair Bird Watching - Birds and Bagels

Location: Devil's Lake SP

All you need is a comfortable lawn chair, a pair of binoculars, and a thermos of your favorite coffee for this morning bird watch. We'll "park" our lawn chair by the lake, along the south shore and watch for ducks, eagles, osprey, warblers and more. This year the Friends group will be supplying bagels for us to enjoy. This program is best for adults and children 10 and older, but open to all ages. Meet at the south shore boat launch parking lot.

Devil's Lake SP information

Founded in 1911, Devil's Lake is the third oldest state park in Wisconsin, the largest, and the most visited. Devil's Lake offers magnificent views from 500-foot quartzite bluffs overlooking a 360-acre lake. Enjoy lakeshore picnic areas, sandy swimming beaches, 29 miles of hiking trails, or ease into the backcountry solitude. Devil's Lake is a beautiful year-round park with an intriguing natural history along the 1,000-mile Ice Age National Scenic Trail.

Celebrate Sturgeon at Wild Rose Fish Hatchery Open House

You can also take a peek at hatchery production from the coldwater (trout and salmon) observation room, then stroll down to the historic village where Wild Rose first began and fish still swim in the raceways.

Work Play Earth Day - Celebrate EARTH DAY by volunteering at your State Parks!

Location: Hartman Creek SP

Hartman Creek State park will be participating in this state-wide event with support from the Friends of Hartman Creek. Volunteers are being sought to conduct invasive species control, campsite cleanup, picnic table assembly and cleaning of our historical Hellestad House. Volunteers should wear work shoes/boots, long pants and gloves. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The Friends of Hartman Creek will supply lunch for all participants at the end of the event. Please check in at the park office. Pre-registration isn't required, but for larger groups please contact us prior to May 1. There is no admission fee for participants. Kettle Moraine SF - Southern Unit information

More than 22,000 acres of glacial hills, kettles, lakes, prairie restoration sites, pine woods and hardwood forests can be found in the Southern Unit, making this a popular area for a wide variety of visitors. The Forest is 30 miles long, extending from the village of Dousman, almost to the city of Whitewater. The forest headquarters is 3 miles west of the village of Eagle on State Highway 59.

Work Play Earth Day - Big Tree Planting - Celebrate EARTH DAY by volunteering at your State Parks!

Kettle Moraine SF - Northern Unit information

The Kettle Moraine Northern Unit is comprised of about 30,000 acres stretching 30 miles across Sheboygan, Fond du Lac and Washington Counties. The forest is managed for multiple use, including recreation management, sustainable forest products, water quality and soil protection, terrestrial and aquatic wildlife, native biological diversity and aesthetics.

Merrick State Park will be participating in the state-wide Work/Play Earth Day event with support from the Merrick T.U.R.T.L.E.S. Volunteers will assist with park cleanup, planting trees, painting picnic tables, splitting firewood, and pulling garlic mustard. Volunteers should wear work shoes/boots, long pants and gloves. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please meet at the main park office. A small meal will be served after the event. For more information, please call 608-687-4936.

Merrick SP information

Located along the lazy Mississippi River and surrounded by the hills of Wisconsin's Coulee Region, the 322-acre Merrick State Park is popular with anglers and boaters. The marshy backwaters are home to a variety of fish, birds, animals and plants. Rising and falling river levels, though controlled some by dams, are part of the natural environment.

Roche-A-Cri State Park will be participating in the state-wide event with support from the Friends of Roche-A-Cri State Park. Volunteers are being sought to clear sticks and leaves from campsites and day use areas and pick up litter. Volunteers should wear work shoes/boots, long pants, gloves and bring shovels, leaf blowers and rakes if they have them. Individual and group efforts are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please meet at the park office for assignments. Lunch will be provided by the friends group. Park admission is free for those volunteering. Roche-A-Cri SP information

Roche-A-Cri State Park, established in 1948, protects a 300-foot-high rock outcropping and Native American petroglyphs and pictographs. The name "Roche-A-Cri" comes from French words meaning "crevice in the rock." The park has 41 rustic campsites and five miles of hiking trails within a forest of large oaks and pines. Carter Creek in the park offers fishing opportunities.

Havenwoods State Forest is Wisconsin's only urban state forest, featuring 237 acres of grasslands, woods and wetlands in the city of Milwaukee. Harrington Beach SP information

Harrington Beach State Park has more than a mile of beach along Lake Michigan. This 715-acre park also features a white cedar and hardwood swamp, old field grasslands with restored wetland ponds and a scenic limestone quarry lake. Camp, sunbathe, picnic, hike, bird watch, fish or practice astronomy. An observatory is open to the public for monthly viewings.

Richard Bong SRA information

Once designated to be a jet fighter base, Richard Bong State Recreation Area is fittingly named after Major Richard I. Bong, a Poplar, WI native who was America's leading air ace during World War II. The air base was abandoned three days before concrete was to be poured for a 12,500-foot runway. Local citizens had the foresight to protect this open space for future generations.

Door County Half Marathon and Nicolet Bay 5K

The entire Door County Half Marathon and 5K are run on closed road courses through Peninsula State Park. The races begin and end just a few strides from Nicolet Bay Beach, where the runners' concourse is located. The park naturalist will be staffing an information table during the run. Stop by and say hello! Practice using binoculars, too. Learn how Peninsula is managing ash tree mortality with the arrival of the invasive Emerald Ash Borer beetle. Considered Wisconsin's most complete park, Peninsula offers 468 campsites, three group camps, a summer theater, an 18-hole golf course, sand beach, bike trails, a lighthouse and eight miles of Door County shoreline. The rollicking waves that skip towards Peninsula's sky high bluffs are part of the Niagara Escarpment.

If you are a frog fanatic, you will want to join us for this nocturnal trip to the park's kettle ponds. We'll listen for spring peepers, wood frogs, and chorus frogs. We'll also listen for other night sounds as we hike the Johnson Moraine Trail. Bring your flashlight as we'll be hiking right around dusk. This program's activities are designed with families in mind, but open to "kids" of all ages. Meet at the Steinke Basin parking lot.
