Horicon Marsh Bird Festival

Horicon Marsh Education Center information

Horicon Marsh has been formally recognized as a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention of the United Nations. This renowned marsh is now home to the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center. The Wildlife Education Program has been conducted at the marsh since the mid-1980s. This program focuses on the abundant wildlife resources of the marsh, their ecology and applied management.

Wings Over Weborg

Peninsula State Park, an official Wisconsin Migration Stopover Site, is hosting an opportunity to go birding with the park naturalist. Meet at Weborg Shelter at 9 a.m. to stroll this birding hotspot. Yellow-rumped warblers, mergansers and flycatchers frequent this area. Bring binoculars if you have them (limited supply will be available). We'll also identify violets an other blooming flowers. Dress to be outside. Easy walking. This program is free and open to the public but a state park vehicle sticker is required.

Considered Wisconsin's most complete park, Peninsula offers 468 campsites, three group camps, a summer theater, an 18-hole golf course, sand beach, bike trails, a lighthouse and eight miles of Door County shoreline. The rollicking waves that skip towards Peninsula's sky high bluffs are part of the Niagara Escarpment.

A Hike Back in Time

Join retired Park Naturalist Ken Lange on a geologic exploration of Devil's Lake. See rocks transported by glaciers, potholes, Devil's Doorway, a 200-year old cedar quartzite glade, and a pygmy forest. This hike is approximately 3.5 miles, with some steep sections. Please wear proper footwear and bring plenty of water. Meet at the Steinke Basin Parking Lot.

Founded in 1911, Devil's Lake is the third oldest state park in Wisconsin, the largest, and the most visited. Devil's Lake offers magnificent views from 500-foot quartzite bluffs overlooking a 360-acre lake. Turtles

Drop in to meet some live turtles, make racing turtles, and turn a dollar into a turtle! Younger kids will enjoy the chance to pretend to be a turtle. On a sunny day, take a hike out to the ponds to look for turtles basking in the sun. Drop in anytime between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Mirror Lake SP information

This park is named for its centerpiece, a lake which often is so Locationcalm that not a ripple marks its surface. The lake reflects a wooded shoreline with cliffs up to 50 feet high, a swimming beach, and wetlands that are home to a variety of wildlife. The park's 2,200 acres includes several picnic areas, wooded campsites, summer rentals, and a cabin for people with disabilities.

High Cliff SP information

High Cliff State Park is the only state-owned recreational area on Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin's largest lake. The park gets its name from the limestone cliff of the Niagara Escarpment, which parallels the eastern shore of Lake Winnebago. The magnificent 12-foot statue of Winnebago Indian Chief Red Bird, standing high on a huge granite rock, overlooks the lake and is a popular destination in the park.

Kettle Moraine SF - Southern Unit information

More than 22,000 acres of glacial hills, kettles, lakes, prairie restoration sites, pine woods and hardwood forests can be found in the Southern Unit, making this a popular area for a wide variety of visitors. The Forest is 30 miles long, extending from the village of Dousman, almost to the city of Whitewater. The forest headquarters is 3 miles west of the village of Eagle on State Highway 59.

Water Life: Exploring Nature Program

Armed with nets, buckets, and hand lenses explore the shores of Mauthe Lake. We may encounter backswimmers, striders, and tadpoles. Be prepared to get your feet wet. Wear old tennis shoes for trudging in the mud. This program is best for families/groups with children between the ages of 6 and 12 years. Kettle Moraine SF - Northern Unit information

The Kettle Moraine Northern Unit is comprised of about 30,000 acres stretching 30 miles across Sheboygan, Fond du Lac and Washington Counties. The forest is managed for multiple use, including recreation management, sustainable forest products, water quality and soil protection, terrestrial and aquatic wildlife, native biological diversity and aesthetics.

Spring Wildflower Stroll

Meet at the Pines Group Camp with Barb Delaney, an ecologist and specialist in the botanical bio-diversity of our region, and immerse your senses in the spring wildflower display. Take in the subtle colors of new growth. We'll review many plant names as well as have fun finding the quirky, the bold and the rare beauties. Smell the rich earth, feel the cool air by the spring-fed creek. Our senses help us appreciate the variety of micro-habitats that allow such a diversity of life to thrive here.

If the group is interested following the stroll: Meet at the Beach House at 12:30 p.m. for a continued discussion of botany, ecology and a look at some unusual plants near the lake!

Mud Hike

Its spring and the trails are full of mud! Join us for a slippery, wet, and definitely muddy hike as we traverse the trails at Steinke Basin - the muddiest trails in the park. Make sure to wear clothes and shoes/boots that can get full of mud; we're not being delicate on this hike! You may want to bring extra pants and/or shoes to change into afterwards to save your car's interior. This is a great hike for kids to participate in! Meet at the Steinke Basin Parking Lot.

Astronomy at Home

William Dirienzo, UW-Sheboygan Astronomy Professor, will give a presentation on the basics of astronomy appropriate for anyone with little or no background knowledge of astronomy. He will give a brief overview of the universe and the solar system, offer tips for observing on your own, and discuss some upcoming astronomical events. Following his presentation, UW-Sheboygan telescopes will be available for stargazing. Children must be accompanied by an adult. No pets allowed. Meet at the Sanderling Nature Center.
