Looking for an adventure? Come see the "Snow" moon and explore our trails after dark! We welcome hikers of all ages to enjoy the outdoors and the beautiful scenery of George W. Mead Wildlife Area. Experience the sights and sounds of the wildlife area after dark and enjoy the full moon.

Please bring hiking/snow boot and appropriate andclothing for the weather.Hot cocoa in the visitor center to follow.

Mead Wildlife Area Center information

The Stanton W. Mead Education and Visitor Center is a 6,208 square foot education and administration facility designed as an example of sustainable and environmentally-responsible construction. One of the goals of the Mead Wildlife Area is to provide wildlife and environmental programs to the citizens of Wisconsin. These programs help to foster a sense of environmental stewardship, that through education we can achieve a better understanding of the values and issues of our wildlife and natural resources.

Candlelight Ski, Hike and Snowshoe

Location: Lake Wissota SP

Come out to Lake Wissota State Park to ski, hike or snowshoe on beautiful candlelit trails. Campfires will be provided, but please bring your own provisions for hotdogs or s'more's. Hot chocolate and hot cider will be available. Snowshoes will also be available to borrow with a suggested donation. Parking will be in the boat landing parking lot. A vehicle admission sticker is required and may be purchased at the park. Sponsored by Friends of Lake Wissota State Park.

Lake Wissota SP information

This park northeast of Chippewa Falls has more than 1,000 acres of forest and open prairie on a 6,300-acre man-made lake. Lake Wissota State Park offers secluded campsites, hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, picnic and playground areas, and a 285-foot swimming beach. Boating, canoeing, kayaking, and water skiing are popular summer activities on Lake Wissota.

Brule River Candlelight Ski and Snowshoe

Candlelight Ski and snowshoe. Candles will light 2 miles of trails including a part of the snow shoe trail. Grills, picnic tables, and a bonfire will be provided. Trail passes not required for this event, which is sponsored by the Brule River State Forest with volunteer assistance from the Brule Valley Ski Club [exit DNR].

Candlelight Hike

Location: Newport SP

Experience winter beauty at Newport State Park! Hike a 1.2-mile trail lit with glowing candlelight. The trail starts at the Picnic Area parking lot (Lot #3). At the end of the trail, participants will find the shelter building complete with an outdoor bonfire, fireplace to warm up by and refreshments. Grills will be available for anyone who wishes to bring along the makings for a picnic supper or marshmallow roast. The event is free, but a Wisconsin State Park Vehicle Admission Sticker is required.

Due to snow conditions, this event is being held as a hike only this year.

Newport State Park, northeast of Ellison Bay, is Wisconsin's only formally-designated wilderness park. With 2,373 acres and 11 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, the park offers quiet alternatives to bustling Door County. Explore 30 miles of hiking trails with hike-in campsites. There are evergreen and hardwood forests, wetlands and upland meadows.

Copper Falls Candlelight Ski/Snowshoe

Get outside this winter and enjoy lighted trails at beautiful Copper Falls State Park! A 2.5-mile/1.6-km section of the ski trails, and a 1-mile snowshoe trail will be lit with hundreds of glowing luminaries. Afterwards warm up by the fire and enjoy refreshments provided by the Friends of Copper Falls State Park.

Copper Falls SP information

Ancient lava flows, deep gorges, and spectacular waterfalls make Copper Falls one of Wisconsin's most scenic parks. Log buildings built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s add to the park's charm. There is plenty to do; hiking, bicycling, picnicking, fishing and swimming. The North Country National Scenic Trail passes through Copper Falls State Park.

Its winter, but that doesn't mean you have to stay inside! Cure your winter cabin fever and join us for this winter adventure! Go on a self-guided snowshoe (depending on snow) or hike through the park. Warm up by the campfire and make a s'more. Bring your snowshoes or borrow one of our pairs - we have lots of sizes to fit everyone in your family. Make sure you dress appropriately. Meet outside the Rock Elm shelter on the park's north shore. Devil's Lake SP information

Founded in 1911, Devil's Lake is the third oldest state park in Wisconsin, the largest, and the most visited. Devil's Lake offers magnificent views from 500-foot quartzite bluffs overlooking a 360-acre lake. Enjoy lakeshore picnic areas, sandy swimming beaches, 29 miles of hiking trails, or ease into the backcountry solitude. Devil's Lake is a beautiful year-round park with an intriguing natural history along the 1,000-mile Ice Age National Scenic Trail.

Candlelight hike and astronomy viewing

Join the Friends of Wyalusing and StarSplitters for a winter candlelight event. Depending on the amount of snow there will be hiking, snow shoeing, and astronomy viewing with the StarSplitters. Enjoy the torch-lit trail as it follows Whitetail Meadows Trail through prairie and woods. Enjoy star gazing in the crisp cool winter air. Telescopes and astronomy information will be presented by the StarSplitters. There will be bonfires and refreshments available to warm you up. All activities will start at the Larry Huser Astronomy Building. Sponsored by the Friends of Wyalusing and StarSplitters of Wyalusing. A park sticker is required and can be purchased at the park office.

Wyalusing SP information

At Wyalusing State Park, camp 500 feet above the confluence of the Wisconsin and Mississippi rivers. One of Wisconsin's oldest state parks, Wyalusing features family and group camps, hiking trails, a canoe trail, Native American burial mounds, bird watching, fishing, boating, bicycling, and picnicking near several scenic overlooks of the river valleys below.

Lake Kegonsa SP information

Lake Kegonsa State Park offers a natural, peaceful setting beside a glacier-hewed lake. The lake offers swimming, fishing, water-skiing, sailing and motor boating. The lake covers 3,209 acres and is more than 30 feet deep. Park visitors enjoy the lake's excellent fishing. Prairie, forest and marsh habitats offer a variety of camping, hiking, picnicking and skiing opportunities.

31st Annual Pike Lake Candlelight Ski and Hike

This whimsical event is one that the whole family is sure to enjoy. Bring the skis or hiking boots to enjoy the park from a whole new perspective. There will be a total of 2 miles illuminated by candlelight, so you are welcome to be out for however long you'd like. Afterwards, meet at the North Shelter for a bonfire, complimentary treats, guest presentation on WI mammals, and of course hot chocolate! Please help us reduce our waste by bringing along your own mug or thermos. Meet at the Beach.

Kettle Moraine SF - Pike Lake Unit information

The Pike Lake Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest is in the middle of the Kettle Moraine, a strip of glacial landforms which extends through southeastern Wisconsin to Lake Winnebago. The forest is named after the 522-acre, spring-fed kettle: Pike Lake. Powder Hill, a large glacial kame, provides the opportunity for a great hike and view. Visitors can enjoy camping, swimming, hiking, fishing, picnicking, and much more within the forest.

Full Moon Walk

Traverse the two-mile trail around Mauthe Lake under the light of a full moon. Dress for the weather including snow boots. This walk is best for ages 8 and older. Meet at the Forest Headquarters located at N1765 County Road G, Campbellsport, which is south of County Road SS near New Prospect. The walk will be canceled if there is severe weather.

Kettle Moraine SF - Northern Unit information

The Kettle Moraine Northern Unit is comprised of about 30,000 acres stretching 30 miles across Sheboygan, Fond du Lac and Washington Counties. The forest is managed for multiple use, including recreation management, sustainable forest products, water quality and soil protection, terrestrial and aquatic wildlife, native biological diversity and aesthetics.

Richard Bong SRA information

Once designated to be a jet fighter base, Richard Bong State Recreation Area is fittingly named after Major Richard I. Bong, a Poplar, WI native who was America's leading air ace during World War II. The air base was abandoned three days before concrete was to be poured for a 12,500-foot runway. Local citizens had the foresight to protect this open space for future generations.

Getting sick of being cooped up this winter? Bring your family, and friends and come to the Mead Wildlife Area to get outside and enjoy winter! We will take you on a short, fun hike through the property. This is great opportunity for beginners to get experience with snowshoes!

Use our snowshoes or bring your own. We have snowshoes for ages 7 to adult. Feel free to bring sleds for younger children.
If you are interested in a guided hike, there will be one starting at 10:30am and another one starting at 1:30pm.Hot cocoa in the Visitor Center to follow.

Horicon Marsh Education Center information

Horicon Marsh has been formally recognized as a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention of the United Nations. This renowned marsh is now home to the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center. The Wildlife Education Program has been conducted at the marsh since the mid-1980s. This program focuses on the abundant wildlife resources of the marsh, their ecology and applied management.
