Horicon Marsh has been formally recognized as a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention of the United Nations. This renowned marsh is now home to the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center. The Wildlife Education Program has been conducted at the marsh since the mid-1980s. This program focuses on the abundant wildlife resources of the marsh, their ecology and applied management.

Howling for Conservation: A Gray Wolf study

Once designated to be a jet fighter base, Richard Bong State Recreation Area is fittingly named after Major Richard I. Bong, a Poplar, WI native who was America's leading air ace during World War II. The air base was abandoned three days before concrete was to be poured for a 12,500-foot runway. Local citizens had the foresight to protect this open space for future generations.

Turtle River Pursuit

If you want to come and enjoy a place of serenity and tranquility come to the Mecca ski trails and enjoy two days of racing with exhilarating competitors. Or for the first-time racer or skier try the family friendly Claire D' Loon Classic Tour. The Wisconsin DNR Turtle Flambeau Scenic Waters Area partners with their local ski group; MECCA ski club. The club grooms skate & classic skiing and snow shoe loops that partially fall on the DNR's Little Turtle Trail on the Little Turtle Flowage, Mercer, WI. MECCA is hosting their annual Turtle River Pursuit on Feb. 15-16. This will be a 11K Classic Leg (Feb. 15) and an 11K Freestyle Leg (Feb. 16). There will also be a NEW Claire D' Loon 5K Classic Tour on Saturday Feb. 15. Eagle Adventure Bus Tour

Candlelight Ski, Snowshoe and Family Sledding

Join us at the picnic pavilion at Brunet Island State Park to enjoy sledding down the beach hill or strap on the skis for a beautiful candlelight ski. The trail will also be groomed for hiking or snowshoeing. The fireplaces will be stoked, and hot refreshments and hot dogs will be waiting to warm you! Cross-country skis and snowshoes are available for free use on a first-come, first-served basis.

Brunet Island State Park, on the Chippewa and Fisher rivers, offers more than 1,300 acres of scenic beauty, wildlife and recreational opportunities. Quiet lagoons and channels are excellent for canoeing and wildlife watching. The landscape in Chippewa County is a product of the most recent Ice Age. The rolling terrain carries a wide variety of forest types and is home to a multitude of wildlife.

Winter Twilight Walk or Snowshoe

Join the naturalist for a guided winter hike along the Steinke Basin Trail at Devil's Lake. We'll discover what's starting to wake up when day transitions into night. The hike will be just over 2 miles and, depending on the weather, could be icy so be prepared. If there is snow, we'll snowshoe the trail. Please come dressed for the weather and no pets on the twilight hike. Meet at the Steinke Basin parking Lot.

Founded in 1911, Devil's Lake is the third oldest state park in Wisconsin, the largest, and the most visited. Candlelight Night in the Park

Candlelight Snowshoe/Hike

Merrick SP information

Located along the lazy Mississippi River and surrounded by the hills of Wisconsin's Coulee Region, the 322-acre Merrick State Park is popular with anglers and boaters. The marshy backwaters are home to a variety of fish, birds, animals and plants. Rising and falling river levels, though controlled some by dams, are part of the natural environment.

Candlelight Snowshoe Hike

The Friends of Rib Mountain State Park invite the public to explore Rib Mountain State Park on snowshoes. There will be hot chocolate, hot cider, and special goodies, as well as marshmallows to roast around the campfire.Start your hike at the new Friends Gathering Space, just past the Park office.Some snowshoes are available to borrow but we suggest you bring your own snowshoes if you have them. Flashlights and headlamps are recommended.Donations to cover costs are welcome.A park annual or daily admission sticker is required. Parking is limited, so please consider carpooling.

Rib Mountain SP information

This billion-year-old hill is one of the oldest geological formations on earth. Rib Mountain State Park is a premier day-use facility with picnicking, hiking trails and a reservable amphitheater. The top of the 60-foot observation tower offers spectacular views of the Wausau area and Wisconsin River. Granite Peak Ski Area is on the north face of the mountain and offers downhill skiing and snowboarding during winter.

Willow River Candlelight Ski, Hike and Snowshoe

With nearly 3,000 acres of prairie, forests, and panoramic river scenery, Willow River State Park offers year-round recreation opportunities in western Wisconsin. The park is about five miles northeast of Hudson, and has a campground, a boat launch and a 400-foot beach and picnic area centered on 172-acre Little Falls Lake.

Gov. Thompson Candlelight Ski and Hike

Join us for an evening of candlelit recreation! The park and trails will be lit by more than 800 candle luminaries and accented with ice sculptures. Skiers can take an easy 1-mile loop candlelit trail groomed for both classic (diagonal striding) and skate skiing as it weaves through the woods. Non-skiers are welcome to hike another 1-mile candlelit trail with scenic views over Woods Lake. Hikers, snowshoers and pets are not allowed on the ski trail, but are welcome on the hiking trail. Warming fires and hot chocolate will be available for everyone in the Woods Lake Shelter. Vehicle admission (park sticker) is required and can be purchased at the park office the day of the event. Trails start at the Woods Lake Picnic Area off of Paust Lane, 1.5 miles west of Parkway Road off Ranch Rd.
