Astronomy In the Park

Join Dr. Jennifer Anderson from the Winona State University Geoscience Department and members of the WSU Astronomy Club at the Nature Center at Merrick State Park for a night under the stars. We will have some day-time activities and presentations as well as telescopes for night sky viewing.

Merrick SP information

Located along the lazy Mississippi River and surrounded by the hills of Wisconsin's Coulee Region, the 322-acre Merrick State Park is popular with anglers and boaters. The marshy backwaters are home to a variety of fish, birds, animals and plants. Rising and falling river levels, though controlled some by dams, are part of the natural environment.

Kettle Moraine SF - Southern Unit information

More than 22,000 acres of glacial hills, kettles, lakes, prairie restoration sites, pine woods and hardwood forests can be found in the Southern Unit, making this a popular area for a wide variety of visitors. The Forest is 30 miles long, extending from the village of Dousman, almost to the city of Whitewater. The forest headquarters is 3 miles west of the village of Eagle on State Highway 59.

Fall Torch-lit Hike in the Park

This event has been cancelled due to flooding within the park and a forecast of more rain on Saturday.

Bring family land friends to enjoy a self-guided fall evening hike along a torch-lit trail. Visitors are asked to park in the picnic lots and walk to the outdoor shelter near parking lot P8. Master naturalist Chris Lilek will entertain with songs and stories around the campfire. Cider and snacks will be provided at the shelter. Children must be accompanied by an adult. No pets allowed.

Wyalusing SP information

At Wyalusing State Park, camp 500 feet above the confluence of the Wisconsin and Mississippi rivers. One of Wisconsin's oldest state parks, Wyalusing features family and group camps, hiking trails, a canoe trail, Native American burial mounds, bird watching, fishing, boating, bicycling, and picnicking near several scenic overlooks of the river valleys below.

Universe in the Park

Universe in the Park is a popular outreach program of the UW-Madison Astronomy Department and is predicated on a very simple idea: the best environment in which to introduce the general public to astronomy is outside under dark skies. The UitP session begins with a 20-30 minute talk and slide presentation covering a broad view of astronomy and recent astronomical news. Following the presentation, a telescope is set up to view whatever astronomical objects are available. Question and answer period follows around the telescope. Meet at Nicolet Beach and bring a blanket or lawn chair.

Considered Wisconsin's most complete park, Peninsula offers 468 campsites, three group camps, a summer theater, an 18-hole golf course, sand beach, bike trails, a lighthouse and eight miles of Door County shoreline. The rollicking waves that skip towards Peninsula's sky high bluffs are part of the Niagara Escarpment.

Harrington Beach SP information

Harrington Beach State Park has more than a mile of beach along Lake Michigan. This 715-acre park also features a white cedar and hardwood swamp, old field grasslands with restored wetland ponds and a scenic limestone quarry lake. Camp, sunbathe, picnic, hike, bird watch, fish or practice astronomy. An observatory is open to the public for monthly viewings.

Devil's Lake SP information

Founded in 1911, Devil's Lake is the third oldest state park in Wisconsin, the largest, and the most visited. MacKenzie Center Fall Festival

MacKenzie Center information

The MacKenzie Center, just 25 miles north of Madison, is one of the most diverse education centers in Wisconsin. With interpretive trails, exhibits, museums and programming available for school and youth groups, MacKenzie is a wonderful place to visit and learn about the natural world. The State Game Farm is connected to the MacKenzie Center and is adjacent to the arboretum on the western half of the property.

Horicon Marsh Education Center information

Horicon Marsh has been formally recognized as a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention of the United Nations. This renowned marsh is now home to the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center. The Wildlife Education Program has been conducted at the marsh since the mid-1980s. This program focuses on the abundant wildlife resources of the marsh, their ecology and applied management.

The Kettle Moraine Northern Unit is comprised of about 30,000 acres stretching 30 miles across Sheboygan, Fond du Lac and Washington Counties. The forest is managed for multiple use, including recreation management, sustainable forest products, water quality and soil protection, terrestrial and aquatic wildlife, native biological diversity and aesthetics.

Pattison SP information

Pattison State Park features the highest waterfalls in Wisconsin and the fourth highest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains. Big Manitou Falls is 165 feet high, and Twin Little Manitou Falls is 31 feet high. This 1,436-acre park also has a lake with a beach, a nature center, camping, nine miles of hiking trails and abundant wildlife.

Ho-Chunk Wisconsn Dells Singer and Dancers to Perform at Aztalan

The popular Wisconsin Dells Singers and Dancers will perform traditional Ho-Chunk Nation songs and dances at Aztalan Sate Park. The Ho-Chunk lived in the Aztalan area before and after formal removals by the U.S. Government in the 1830s, and there is archaeological evidence that some Ho-Chunk people lived at the remains of the ancient town of Aztalan during the early 19th century. The famous original town had been occupied by Mississippian culture people between AD 1050 and 1200. The troupe will also discuss the significance of the history, dances, songs and drum in Ho-Chunk culture.

The Wisconsin Dells Singers and Dancers have performed previously at the park, much to the enjoyment and education of visitors. The event is sponsored by the Friends of Aztalan State Park. Attendees will need a Wisconsin State Park vehicle sticker and these can be purchased at the park at the time of the event. Aztalan State Park is located on County Hwy. Q, one mile east of Lake Mills.

Aztalan SP information

Aztalan State Park is a National Historic Landmark and contains one of Wisconsin's most important archaeological sites. It showcases an ancient Middle-Mississippian village that thrived between A.D. 1000 and 1300. The people who settled Aztalan built large, flat-topped pyramidal mounds and a stockade around their village. Portions of the stockade and two mounds have been reconstructed in the park.
